mustards: sozo vs tad

I was wondering that too, mainly because of the "temporary" shortage of .022 Sozos. I got some Mojo's in and will use them in my next 50 watt build. Then record sound clips with the same setup and compare the results.

The Mojo Dijon and the TAD Mustard is the same cap - or better vice versa: The TAD Mustard cap is a Mojo Dijon, just stamped different.

A lot of the TAD stuf =MOJO=TAD=MOJO

It's unclear to me who manyfactures and who relabels (nothing wrong with that BTW).

So Larry, you really don't like the TADs?

No, this I've never said! The TAD's only aren't the 'right' ones for a 60' sound spot on IMO, but the might be a good choice for a 80' sound - not so complex and enhanced in the mids, but bigger in the lows with more high end.

i have an old ENGL preamp with WIMA MKS4 caps and i want to tried the TAD Mustard on it, what do you think? im looking for less bright tone with more organic feel but still tight low end.

The WIMA MKS4 is a Metallized Film cap. That is, they deposit a layer of metal (in a vacuum) over the Polyester film. The TAD Mustards are Film & Foil, that is they are constructed of multiple layers of plastic Poly film with Metal Foil.
My experience has been that Film & Foil caps, any kind or brand, usually sound more "organic" or "Natural" than metallized film caps.

In addition, the shape of the cap has some bearing on sound. Long small diameter tubular shaped caps (think Mustard caps) are supposed to work/sound better than other shapes according to Sozo's web site....
Those WIMA MKS4 caps are rectangular shaped, no?

My working MO is to try a part out and listen to how it actually sounds.
I've been surprised and found caps that I initially dismissed as not suitable, as sounding great.
BTW, WIMA has long been known for making great capacitors.
Their "Durolit" film & foil caps were used extensively in the VOX AC30, and we all know what a great sounding amp that is.

Slightly off topic but praise for Sozo standards... my first amp build was an 18w that I turned into a TMB. Had Mallory caps and I was used to its sound. Replaced the caps with Sozo and it went from good to great. The whole character of the amp changed. Lower mids were now there, gain was way more pleasing and less harsh. I never use anything but Sozo and real mustards anymore!

I've tried the following caps:
Vishay MKT 1813
Orange Drop 716p
Mallory 150
Sozo Standards

I do like the Mallorys they have this "grind" to them that is gorgeous, Orange drops sound sterile in Marshall type amps, Vishay sound too brittle, Sozo hit the spot.

it's a toss up between Mallory and Sozo for me but I do prefer the Sozo's.
