Metroamp "How amps work" videos, a possiblity?

Post by slashsound » Wed Apr 01, 2009 4:08 pm

Hey George,

thanks for hosting such a wonderful and informative forum. I wanted to ask you if you would consider making video lessons of how amps work with all the gory detail. The lack of video lessons on this subject is amazing. I would love to see a video that has animation showing exactly whats going on inside an amp, both physically and mathematically and how to tweak it. It would be interesting I think to have a series that goes from 101 to expert stuff. Do you think you might be able to do this? Obviously I would expect to pay a fair price for any kind of video, I wouldnt mind paying 100 dollars a video even.

A second DVD would have the "Bonus Features" showing George trying to kill his emplyees with hot sauce!!!! (I take no responsibility, even if I do send a lot of the sauce.......)

RANT MODE ON:

The third DVD would show George fumbling around with Adobe After Effects and pulling out his hair, trying to animate resistors and capacitors flying into a PTP board in all the right places and simulating electricity running through them and into the finger of the poor guy pointing out how electricity flows from each component. Then the camera man would cut to the same guy FRYING from touching a filter cap without draining it first. Suddenly the video ends and the paramedics come flying into view...fade to black...

Slashsound...come on, sir! What you're asking for is a huge undertaking that would cost tens of thousands of dollars to do right, in terms of George's time/money spent/camera crew and post production. I know you're eager to learn all this stuff by next week, but unless you've got some real deep pockets/wallet to finance this, you'd better buy some books and start reading, as well as reverse engineering cabs and stuff while you're at it.

I don't know why you think everyone who paid for their knowledge should give it to you for free (via video and DVD no less!), but that's just NOT the way it works.

Jim

I take it now wouldn't be a good time to ask you for a video on cabinet restoration and tolexing then?

Ha ha! Great responses!

DVD kit instructions comes up from time to time. If I felt we could do it better than someone cramming a Handycam in a chassis while I work, I would go for it. I suspect we will have this someday. But not likely to be soon.

We have tested the theory. It's so hard to get a clear shot of working inside a chassis, my hands are always in the way.

I do wish there was a video by someone that described the inner workings of tube amps.

Ha! I'd consider all of them... but that might be distracting.

Also, Southbay dude, I 100% agree with your rant. slashsound, dude, how old are you man? Because if you really want to learn about all the workings of an amplifier and how exactly electromagnetism affects an amplification circuit I suggest doing your best to try to get into a 4-year university and study electrical engineering or if you're super hardcore study physics (that's what I did). That is the DEFINITE way to learn and understand all the processes of an amplifier. You'll need complex circuit analysis to understand an amplifier 120%... the way you're describing the process. I also bring up the age thing because when I was around 14-15 I was pretty obsessed with Mr. Saul Hudson myself (still am to a certain degree... although I can't stand VR). Also, when I first learned about stompboxes I was determined that this was my calling in life... eventually I met lots of women and alcohol and forgot about that "calling." Trust me man, it takes a lot of blood, sweat, tears, time, and analysis to make something your "true calling." Don't expect to learn everything about something as complex as guitar amplifiers in a week, a month, or even a year. Like we say in physics (when describing the incredibly impossible topic of time travel), "There's no such thing as a free lunch."

Anyway, good luck to you, and aside from the Kevin O'Connor and Dave Hunter books you might want to try Richard Kuehnel's books from the Pentode Press. But before you read any of those books, I highly recommend the eternal classic The Art of Electronics by Horowitz and Hill. In college that was the book I swore by.

Alright dudes, keep rockin like Dokken!

Oh, I forgot to mention that if you're actually older than I am, slashsound, disregard the whole "life lesson" thing. But still, check out those books and good luck and all, dude. Also, that post may not have been entirely on topic, but I certainly meant it as an addendum to you previous posts under different headings.

I'm 30 years old and I'm an Aerospace Engineering student at Auburn Univerity. I have a limited knowledge of basic electricity and cirquits, the kind you learn in College Physics with Calculus. Since you asked. BTW I have been obsessed with slash since I was about 8 years old 8)

I'll add a +1 for the Richard Kuehnel books and say that Dave Hunter's The Guitar Amp Handbook is a must read. As is everything on Randall Aiken's technical articles pages. However, there's no easy win and there's no substitute for getting your soldering iron hot. Reference books tell much, but experience tells more.

Oh, and of course a big +1 for Larry's recommendation.
