Made some clips today of the 100w MV vs. 100w '69 Spec... I think you'll hear the differences... Playing is for tonal purposes only (pardon any cringe inducing notes)

Hey, are you sure those are the right clips? They sound like the same amp to me. I could be wrong.

They're different! I'll splice them so you can hear them back to back... I thought the recordings caught the differences I hear? it makes it easier to hear the differences one piece at a time... I'll try to get this done tonight! In general the 100w MV has more hair and more highs... the 100w '69 spec sounds more compressed and spongy to my ears (not in a bad way, just different)...

I added a side by side clip... in defense to your comment, the clips sound more alike on soundclick than the raw tracks in my software! Some of the differences have been absorbed by the conversion to mp3!! I can still hear some of the subtleties though! hopefully this helps you hear the differences!

The 100w 69 spec to my ears is more compressed. I am surprized by how similar to each other they sound. Hells bells i have'nt heard that for awhile.

yeah, on there the acdc clip sounded the same. I played it again and could hear a difference in the other stuff you played. I have to say I like the '69 spec better. just my ears. They both sounded good though.

hmmm... I can go back and try to eq them better... I literally dimed the 100MV recorded, plugged into the 100w '69 spec and recorded... same mic setup, same cab... maybe I need to try a different mic placement that will capture the changes better? I used a Cascade Fathead into Reaper Software... maybe I'll try the SM57? any ideas? the differences between them are subtle, the 100MV has less mids and more highs and lows as well as gain, the '69 spec has more mids and sounds more compressed...

no not sound close, the differences are definitely there!! I think I need to redo this effort!!! what my ears are hearing is not translating well on the recording... round 2 coming up....

I must admit, they both do sound very similar in the recordings. Maybe its because the amps are dimed it is overloading the ribbon mic? To me it sounds like the levels are too high somewhere...

I def hear the difference. Not night and day, but obvious.
I'm not really surprised that they sound similar. Both amps use the same transformers, tubes, signal caps, tone stack, 90% of the circuit, filtering and so on....
I'd be amazed if they did sound very different.
I do think that a different mic, mic position or signal path would illustrate the differences better.

its just my ears - i hear a difference between 2 and 3 stage amps.
i don't hear that much difference in the gain factor - 1 stage difference is what it boils down to. its interesting they sound so similiar.
