Length/diameter of 2w piher resistors?
Dear forum members,
i'd appreciate if somebody could tell me how long are 2w pihers. I just got some 10k's that ought to be 2w, but they are very very very big (24mm in length), quite a bit bigger than 2w AB carbon comps. So now i'm not really sure, what i have.
Thanks a lot in advance!
All the best,
VintageCharlie

Re: Length/diameter of 2w piher resistors?
Right, going through my stash, 2W are huge. I'd say Marshall only used 1W myself. I'll measure what I have, not actually branded Pihers packaging, but RS Components packaging with "Made In Spain" which is pretty conclusively Pihers I would suggest.
1/2w
Total Length (including leads) Approx 63mm
Body Length 9.1mm
Body Diameter (at centre of body) 2.75mm
1w
Total Length (including leads) Approx 80mm
Body Length 15.75mm
Body Diameter (at centre of body) 6.26mm
2w
Total Length (including leads) Approx 80mm
Body Length 23.8mm
Body Diameter (at centre of body) 8.33mm
Now, how much you read into this is up to you. I know the sizes and shapes of the 1/2watters varied A LOT. Mine are particularly small and probably quite a late production period resistor (80's I suspect). Whether or not this carried over into the 1W and 2W I really don't know, though I haven't seen any variations in shape unlike the 1/2 watters. The 1/2 watter vary from really rounded, to more like the classic Beyschlag type shape, almost impossible to tell them apart from Beyschlag's in fact. I know this as I have some.
Now, please don't anybody PM me and ask for Marshall values, because I really haven't got any.
In a nutshell, I don't believe that Marshall used 2W resistors.
Hope this helps Karlis,
Daymz

Thanks, Demonufo!
Yes, this seems unlikely to me now too that Marshall used 2w pihers - i haven't seen a pic of any Marshall with almost 2.5cm long resistors on it. 2w cc's can be seen often though, but these are much smaller. Anyway - thanks - just wanted to make sure that what i have are really 2w's - i thought they might be 5w

Sorry, yes, I meant to state that I don't think Marshall ever used 2W Pihers. You see a lot of 2W CC's. And I'm not sure what rating the larger Iskra's that they use are, as I have none at all in any packaging.

Re: Length/diameter of 2w piher resistors?
I am at work at moment (my trainee is 'playing' a few feet away ) but AFAIK the basic Pihers in most positions are 1/2watt.
I also have some slightly larger ones that are 1 watt, slightly smaller than a 0.022uF mustard cap. These are 10k
The next size up I have always presumed are 2 watt, these are the same size as a 0.022uF mustard and are the same size as the ones on my late Marshall boards. I have run out of these in 8k2 and 10k
Also have some quite large ones in 10k and 8k2 that were sent to me as 2watters but they are almost twice the size, in terms of length and suspect they are 3w. To complicate it further I also have some longer ones same diameter as the 3 watters that I presume are 4 or 5watt. Also have some 3 or 4watt Iskras in 8k2.
A definitive list catalogue would be useful. I should try to get some pics but getting home far too late at the moment in pre-holiday blitz!

Re: Length/diameter of 2w piher resistors?
2w pihers are closer to .1uF mustards in size, but are slightly larger than that in diameter.
1w pihers are more like .022 400V mustard size.

I'll post some pics when I actually get home for more than a few hours!

I might do the same if I can actually find the camera in this mayhem!

Neil, it would be great if you could post a pic of the resistors - would be a great reference. I personally am not sure what i actually have after i got the purportedly 2w pihers.

Re: Length/diameter of 2w piher resistors?
Here's what I got (well, some of them anyhow)
Top to bottom
2W
1W
1/2W (that one's a pull, but is the most marshally in shape. Most of my others vary slightly in shape but the size is much the same. Shapes are varying from even more curvey and narrow in the waist, to somewhat Beyschlag like as mentioned above.

Re: Length/diameter of 2w piher resistors?
Thanks a lot for the pic Demonufo!
Yes, then it looks like i have 2w pihers. They are really huge then. From memory i can´t imagine Marshall used them as standard - in most pics the 10k and 8.2k pihers look like 1w. I´d have to check again to be sure.

VintageCharlie
