Marshall Salt & Pepper Basketweave 4x12 cab....from 1973?
I've had this vintage Marshall Salt & Pepper Basketweave 4x12 angled cabinet in my possession for about 10 years. The first time I opened up the cabinet was after buying it (bought it for $200.00 from a co-worker). The Celestions are G12M-25's (T 1221) with the plastic green magnet cover, otherwise known as the Greenbacks. The date was stamped "BF 6" on all 4 speakers (February 6, 1973). So for a long time, and since there is no serial number next to the 1/4" speaker jack, I was under the impression that this cab was a "1960A" from 1973. I finally took the time to take pictures of it with my cell phone (not the best pictures) & wanted to post the pics here on the Metroamp forum. When taking these pictures a week ago, I realized something unusual. On the top left corner, I noticed "2 holes" in the grill cloth. When I read up about these "holes", I heard that the "2 holes" in the top left corner were for the "100" logo & the "3 holes" were for the "Bass" logo. Just to be sure, I re-inspected the top left corner & there wasn't a third hole to be found. A couple people have said that the cab is from 1970 or 1971, but I was really sure it was from 1973. Now I'm thinking the cab might be a 1982A instead of a 1960A & may not be from 1973. Here are some pictures of the mystery cabinet.

I know this cab is from 1968 to 1971 (or 1972). As for what year it is from or if it's a 1960A or 1982A, I'll let the experts chime in.

Your cab has the larger 9" white Marshall logo. That showed up in 1970, although some really rare late 69's had them. You don't have the triangular plywood supports at the bottom of your baffle board inside, though, which is usually a 1970-71 build characteristic.
My opinion (FWIW) is that this is a 1970-71 cab since it has the metal handles, B/W cloth.
The speakers are not original, they're from a 73 checkerboard cloth cab, and it looks like someone has used the original wiring but turned the speakers down on the top to make wiring easier when soldering.
As for the 1960 or 1982 cab thing, they put 100 logos on a bunch of cabs without discretion. That means this could have been either a 1982A or 1960A cab, and since it hasn't got the original speakers, that will be tough to figure out.
Long story short, you've got Pulsonic 102-3 75 hz lead cones which are very desirable models in an old BW cab. Play it and enjoy.

Re: Marshall Salt & Pepper Basketweave 4x12 cab....from 1973
Jim, thank you! Wasn't expecting a quick response.
Now I know that it might be a 1970-'71 cab. I had a feeling the speakers were not original when I saw the top left corner of the cab. That's what raised my suspicions. The guy I bought it from didn't have the original speakers to go with it.
As for the speaker cones, I forgot to point out that the other 3 cones didn't have any numbers or codes stamped on the cones. I'm guessing the speakers are re-cones. Since they are the original Greenbacks, I'll probably end up taking them out & preserving them & go with Celestion G12H-30's. I know the cab may has no value to anyone since the original speakers are gone but to me it's a priceless cab.
Jim, you're the man!

to date it more accurately show us some pics of the bottom where the castors would have been. 3 screw revvo would be late 1970, copper homas would be early 71.
the rivetted handles with basketweave grill are a good indication its late 1970 or early 1971.

Here you go BaronGreenback, a "not the best" picture of the Revvo castor. Though you can't see it, there's a serial number on the castor handle that reads "1D509", not sure if it means anything.BaronGreenback wrote:to date it more accurately show us some pics of the bottom where the castors would have been. 3 screw revvo would be late 1970, copper homas would be early 71.

Here's a better picture from the Amp Archives.

Is it safe to say that this cab is from late 1970? The mystery continues.

yeah those castors, combined with the rivetted on metal handles date it to late 1970 in my opinion. most 71 cabs have the copper homas.
the speakers from 73 are not original.
those castors look to be in awesome condition by the way. look after them. not many of those around nowadays, especially looking like that!

Well....condition-wise, they're varying. The second picture was from the Amp Archives & was not taken by me for it was from somebody else. I just wanted to show what the casters looked like, but the first picture of the Revvo caster was taken by me (the blurred cell phone camera shot).BaronGreenback wrote:those castors look to be in awesome condition by the way. look after them. not many of those around nowadays, especially looking like that!
The 3 Revvo casters on my cab are in good to fair condition. The fourth one has a split in the middle of the wheel, but I'm not worried about it for I won't be gigging with it (that's where my '79 Marshall 1960B comes in).
Jim from Scumback & BaronGreenback, for your valuable information on my cabinet, and even though it could be a 1960A or a 1982A, I will officially call it a late 1970 Marshall 4x12 1960/1982A & leave it as that. The mystery is finally over. I WANT TO THANK YOU BOTH!!!!

No difference in the actual cabs build or construction, same as 1960b, 1935b and 1982b. Year for year they are the same, including the 1935a.
Only the presence or absence of a Bass logo on the 1935 (three holes), a 100 logo on the 1982 (two holes) and no holes on the 1960 and the corresponding speakers to go with them.

Re: Marshall Salt & Pepper Basketweave 4x12 cab....from 1973
ok thanks neil,
i asked because i have this mystery marshall cab that was beat to hell and back (no tolex even)
that i restored a few years ago with no info or serial #'s on it except for 1068 etched in the wood on side baffle.
its a bizzarre slant cab, late 70's 25-30 watt greenies (they could be replacements,)
it has the triangles on the baffle with the big block back support,
the speaker baffle has the pegs that insert into the bottom of cab, perf back board, metal handles with half moons, it has the small logo and the holes for the 100 logo, but it had a weaved checker board type grill cloth.
ive been trying to date it for some time now. i believe its a '71 1982a, but i just dont know. it sounds great though.

Those construction specs sound like second half 68, first half 69.
What do you mean by perfd back board?

triangles on the baffle = 1969 to mid 1970. sounds like its got quite a few swapped parts to me so i wouldnt try and date it from those. the triangles are your most solid 'evidence' to date it with in my opinion.
