The best 1959/92 pre amp tube set up.
Guys I have tried about all of em. 161 or bugle boy in v1 Raytheon long black plate in v2 and telefunken in v3 is about as good as it gets. I go back in forth between the bugle boy and mule in v1. Both sound very similar to me. The bugle boy might have a little more are in the top end.

I also like the Bugle Boys in V1 but in a couple of my amps they can be a little bright. I have some of the 70's orange globe label Amperex/Phillips also, and they seem a bit darker than the Bugle Boys so they go in V1 of my 2204. I have never had the pleasure of trying the Raytheon black plate in V2 though. I wish that I had bought a few off of Marty back when he was selling them. I am running a Sylvania in V3 of my 1986 clone but I will throw in a Telefunken today and give it a listen!

Dan find u a Raytheon for v2. I think you will thank me. They really work like a charm there. I run sylvanias in the v3 some to. They are good there. The tele may be a little better though. I have some orange labeled rca tubes that work decent in v1 for a bright amp. They have the same plate basically as the bugle boy but the seem warmer.
