Can someone help me with a part of the solo for "GGB"
I've been playing around with this song and can't seem to get the right vibe (or notes?) going for the part of the solo right after the ascending trem picking (when the solo really kicks in.) The riff he plays right after the ascending trem picking sounds so smooth coming out of his bend of the G string on the 12th fret. I think it's easier than I'm trying to make it but I can't get that smoothness/fluidity. I'd like to make sure I'm actually playing it correctly before I keep working on it....can any of you guys help me out?
I'm basically playing triplets on the B and high E strings out of that bend. But is it actually hammer-ons? If I remember correctly, I'm playing on the B and E strings 10th, 12th and 13th frets. Driving me nuts!!! This little part is so EVH it's not even funny!

Watch a bazillion hours of Holdsworth in Tokyo playing the red Charvel before you even attempt those 3 bars of insanity.

Are you talking about the lick at 2:28-2:31?

I think so. It's the lick right after the ascending tremolo picking. At the end of the tremolo picking which he plays on the G string, he ends up on the 12th fret and bends up maybe a step, then plays the lick I'm referring to. I'd really like to learn this part.rgorke wrote:Are you talking about the lick at 2:28-2:31?

Many of Ed's fast licks are legato playing, so the part you're talking about is were he does a bend then does a fast legato lick. It's not that hard to do as long as you practice legato runs. You can also slow down the track so you can hear the actual notes. That's what I've done in the past.
There's a guy on youtube who has tips on improving legato playing. I can post it if you want to.And since Ed uses legato playing in many of his fast lick, these tips can help in other leads that he does, like in " So this is love" etc.

Well, that is helpful and of course, awesome! Still not quite getting what he's playing at that point but it is triplets so that is good to know. BTW, his tone sounded pretty damn good in that performance! Much better than when I saw them live in 2012.

Something like this (\ means sliding down to the next note with the index finger):
---------------------------8--12--10--8\7------------------------------------------------------
------------8--10--12---------------------10--8--7-------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------------9-8-7\5---5--9--7--5------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------9--7--5--7-9-7
This is kind of an odd transitional part between the two distinctive sections of the solo.
Man, that song is a cacophony, especially live.
Ed's Holdsworth attempts are kind of silly when you hear what Allan can do with the guitar:

Yeah, Eddie can't come close to what Allan did on that Metal Fatigue album. The song Metal Fatigue is awesome too. Anyone not familiar with it should check it out.
Eddie got taken to school on this jam. He tries to play outside like Allan, but it sounds like jibberish compared to Allan's outside playing.

That's just a quick interpretation of what I see and hear from that live video, slowing down the studio version might nail it down better. I think the solo for Jump is one of Ed's best solo's in this vein.bman5150 wrote:Thanks strat78! I'll work with your tab this weekend and see if I can get through it!

Dumb question that makes me feel old...how do you guys play the song and slow it down? That sure seems like it would be pretty handy!

Re: Can someone help me with a part of the solo for "GGB"
Wjamflan can whip out and post these slowed down tracks pretty easily when he has time. I used to use something called "the amazing slow downer", I'm sure there are others available these days. Ha ha, back in 78 I would drop the turntable down to 16 speed and if necessary, slow it down even further dragging my thumb on the record itself.
