ENGLISH Celestion G12H Anniversary 6402 Cones??

Post by SQUAREHEAD » Thu Jun 18, 2015 2:38 pm

Just found a pair on ebay and they have biege basket with no datecodes,
They do say "MADE IN ENGLAND" on back
Also, the cones are "6402"...
Does this seem right?
Help!

When you say biege basket, do you mean some ones painted the frame? 6402 cones were around the mid 80's to about 93.

A pic would help?

I thought the 6402 cones were specific to the Green Back, 25 watt G12-M's. Interesting find. 8)

No 25 watt celestions (green, beige nor blackback)made from '79 to '88. Celestion reissued the 25 watt (greenback) in 1989. They had the 6402 cones. These were made until the early millineum ( 2002 ?) Then production shifted to China.
Luckily there were a few guitarists in that time frame ('79-'88) that were saavy to the 25 watters. Ratt had older 25 watt loaded cabs as did George Lynch and Eddie obviously did. Most of the rock/metal tones from that era were 65 watt celestions and then 75 watters.

I should have been more specific. I meant the early 90's, re-issue 25 watt green backs. What I was getting at was the OP's subject title saying G12H Anniversary 6402 cones. I didn't know that the H, 30 watters used 6402 cones. 8)

6402 cones were pretty much gone by 1997. The 1777, H1777 or 53H1777 cones were used from 98 on, or at least that's what I was told by a former Celestion engineer. Not that it matters a whole bunch, they were good cones, too bad they were discontinued.

Were the 6402 cones specific to the G12M-25 watt re-issues or were they also used on any G12H-30 watt types. That's what I was going with this. 8)

Pretty sure they were used in both jnew. The G12M models sold more than the G12H30's did, so players tend to associate the cone with that speaker. Let me dispel / dispense some cone facts. There are not different 75hz cones for M's and H's when they're both stamped with 6402 on them. It's the exact same cone, but responds differently to the magnet weight, doping style and what voice coil is used.

Very good point. I guess I wasn't sure that when the first generation GB, 25 watt (M type) re-issues were released, there was also the release of the GB, 30 watt (H type) using the 6402's. Or was there? I suppose so. :stars:

Hi Jim, thanks for chiming in.

What were the differences, as far as you could tell, between the 6402 cones and the ones that came after ( the *777's ) ?

Sadly I never did a tonal comparison side by side of three G12M's with 6402, 1777 and 53H1777 cones installed thru the same amp/guitar/etc. So I can't say with certainty what the differences were.

I do know I liked the 6402 best with the 53H1777 sounding very close. The 1777 was a distant 3rd between them. Had I known my subjective ear and tone tests would be needed 8 years later I probably would have taken more notes and done more testing, along the lines of what I did with the pre-rolas, etc.

But I didn't since I wasn't looking to replicate any speaker tones past 1983. Sorry!
