Duke have use g12h30 for made that sound.....probably if he use g12-80 his mod don't will sound correct.....he have developed the mod for work in this way with g12h30......RagnarMarGunn wrote:Sounds close, probably the closest of all your clips Nigel but there is just a tad missing. With this setup I urge you to try JJ 6CA7. I'm also fairly convinced after using Classic Lead 80 from eighties, G12-H30 75hz from '74 & '71 ... and listening to the clips of ´78 G12-80 with 1777 Lead Cone @ 2:26 that they are what's used on the recording. You are extremely close, it's like 98,5% theredukeamps wrote:Got my 70s blackbacks today, its clear for me now it was 70s g12h30 75hz speakers used on AFD, only had the MV at 2,

you don't have understand that i have write.....when you make a mod use speakers and tubes.....so you change caps and res for arrive to a tone that you have listen.....if you have arrive to a tone with some speakers probably with different speakers the tone will be different.....so now your tone is very similar with g12h30, probably with g12-80 don't will similar.....cause you have developed the mod on your speakers.....dukeamps wrote:Benny no one knows which speaker, tubes, were used on the AFD, for me el34 + g12h30 is the way to go, even g12m25w sound great for the mod, if you think differently that's just your opinion, you have no proof that g12 80 + 6550s were used. I see now you are using the 500p33k ts, what happened to the 250p33k is it now wrong ?
One more thing, you are now using a another 2n2470k combo before the second pot, that is just the same as using a 2n2 bright cap, the 2n2470k way is called a fixed bright cap, the other way of putting the 2n2 over the pot is called a variable bright cap, so i can conclude with all the changes you have made, the advise that Levi has given to you is wrong ? or maybe you have the wrong speakers & not sure how to get the real AFD tone.
At the end of the day its all just opinions, not facts, please remember this

re fresh the solder have change the amp voicing, so mids and trebs are change......in that way i have change tone stack and second treble peaker....tone stack isn't important, mids can be cut with setting......i never speak with Frank on treble peakers......but Frank use often fixed bright cap and remove the bright cap on gain......I see now you are using the 500p33k ts, what happened to the 250p33k is it now wrong ?
Yeah i have heard that before, great example of greenback + el34 tone.
Sounds great Nigel. I would love if you were able to try JJ 6CA7 and mix your lovely G12-30H with G12-80 with this amp.dukeamps wrote:I think everyone is convinced about one thing or the other on here, & that is a good thing, I think they are the right speakers, the rest is just recording process, more power tube dist,

Excellent, extremely closeWhat year was that JCM 800 made and is B+ similar to 100W JCM 800?
I stil have to get my 800 working again, only have a AFD mod in Metro 50W and it's a little bit to polite .... needs some anger and tightness.
Thanks Nigel, don't try EH 6CA7, they're bad compared to JJ 6CA7.dukeamps wrote:Cheers manRagnarMarGunn wrote:Sounds great Nigel. I did try g12 80 at one stage but they didn't sound good, they sounded just like very old speakers, as if there was a blanket over them, hard to find good ones. Same with these G12H30 Blackbacks, they still sound very good, but probably darker than how they would have sounded in 1986, when you think about it my speakers are 30 years older lol, so i think 30 years ago they would have sounded 100% right.
I actually use EH 6ca7 in my JVM, great tubes, if i ever open the JVM i will give them a go, but i do believe there was el34s in the 36 amp, Levi said there was el34s in it when he modded it, & he never said that he changed them to 6550, so very shortly after he modded the 36, AFD was recorded.
If i remember correctly the JCM 800 50w amp is from 89, & the B+ was about 480v.
This amp is up for sale, if anyone is interested send me an PM![]()
that is the caracter of g12-80....sound more on mids......the "greenback sound" of afd achieve cause the voicing of 36 mod sound like greenback, like 34 sound (if you cut mids with eq) like greenback (without using greenbacks)....g12-80 add a old/vintage air at the sound, the same air on the record.....36 and 34 sound more on preamp....power stage isn't really important......so power tubes used isn't really important for the voicing of mod......el34 or 6550 the voicing of the amp is always the same, just a little more mids or less......if you try to make 34 using el34 you understand that 34 mod sound change little bit, but voicing is the sameI did try g12 80 at one stage but they didn't sound good, they sounded just like very old speakers, as if there was a blanket over them, hard to find good ones
