I have to agree with you Nigel, I think you have nailed it! What preamp tubes are you using? I feel for those who are close, the choice here could be the icing on the cake.
Cheers, NOS Chinese preamps tubes from the 80s.
Good choice of tubes! I thought that might have been what you were using, but I wasn't 100% sure. They really lend themselves well to the S.I.R. mods.
yes they are very nice tubes, also JJ 6550s are great too, and one more thing make sure you are using SD APH 1, they sound different to the Slash pickups, the SD APH1 were used on the AFD.

Here is a clip from my new 36 mod with my old TAD JTM100 kit, i use this amp to test out different mods because its point to point and easy to try out different ideas.

Guys i need you help

I've been trying to reach Mr Minimite, one of the guys who started the whole SIR tone search.

He seems to be vanish from internet, not Youttube account, no forum user, no nothing.

He had a cool video from the #39 mod and some info on vintage APH1 pickups

I would like to talk to him

Anyone knows anything about him?

thanks

Well, said, I couldn't agree with you more on the APH-1's. They have the sound of both #36 and #34, where the APH-2's do not. The APH-2's lend themselves well to Slash's modern sound of the last few years, but don't sound right for the tones we all are chasing.

Hey Prowler, your link doesn't work. It says there is no video here.

*Edit - Thanks for the new link!

Thanks guys!

I am using G12M 25W Greenbacks .

The mod works also very well with G12T-75 speakers too.

My guitar is LP Standard with Seymour Duncan JB/Jazz pickups.

An active member here gave me te spec and I promised not to share it. I really really really would like to. :what:
I will ask him if he would stop by and share.

Been trying to clear up the bass and tame the treble, while retaining clarity. Put a 47n MTK368 on the input jack (similar to a 2555). Replaced the 1st stage cathode cap 1uf electro with a 680n MKT1813. Changed bright cap to a 2n2 1kv x5f. Put a hot shield on the 3rd stage input. Changed tone control area caps to Jupiter Reds for the bass, treble and PI input.

I'm liking the overall tone and gain, but could do with being a bit brighter I think.
