Geez I have to admit how surprised I am at the difference (positive) by subbing in a 50u instead of a 33u cap in the PI.

Really compliments the amp. Tightens up the bottom just right - better “bark” in the rhythm.

Good call Roe/Neil

On my todo list. I need to get an old copy of protools onto my laptop. Just debugging a couple more things (read: putting a fresh 9v in my VM ffs) and playing with a couple values. On it soon though!

In the mean time, here’s an iPhone recording :) you can get an idea of the grind playing rhythm.

Chain:

LP/ lowish output custom buckers/ gtr volume rolled off a touch - enough to get boost and more gain for leads if you went to 10 (50s wiring)/

Amp: presence 5/bass 0/mids 10/ treble 5/ bright volume 8 (4700pf + 100pf bright cap in circuit).

4x12 pinstripe with celestion heritage g12m 20.

Any crackle on top end is iPhone overloading. No idea how the bottom will translate other than on an iPhone but in the room it was a slightly bass light bit still full sounding.

Oh PS thd hotplate at -12db so it's been de-balled quite a bit.

While waiting for the parts for my Super Bass, I did some amp fiddling. I changed the mains filtering on my 50 watt plexi bass amp to 50uf today. I had it like that a while back and then put it up to 100uf for the last few years. I really don't know why I did that, 50uf is much more to my liking. I can understand for those who want a dirtier, more aggressive tone, the higher filtering holds better together. But the clean sounds are a bit stiff and I find that single coil guitars sound a bit spiky. With 50uf, the amp sags at a bit of a cleaner setting and I love that sound, where the sound isn't too dirty, but the notes kind of explode out of the amp, for lack of a better word. Really distorted rhythm sounds can get a bit messy but I don't really play like that very much, and you get such a nice smooth lead sound. The mids seem a bit sweeter. And the harsh edges of single coils seem to be rounded off in a nice way. Huge difference to my ear and the feel is really nice. I think I will leave it like this for a while. I might eventually try a single preamp voltage dropper and 32uf mains filtering, for a JTM 50 vibe. I have the original, basic Sozo signal caps in this amp. I might try swapping in a set of Synergys, to see what the difference is and maybe I will change out the basic silver mica tone caps as well. Me thinking out loud: I should check what the plate voltage is in this amp, I don't remember!

Anyway just for fun, here are a few very rough cell phone clips that I made this afternoon. I was getting a lot more hum than usual, especially on the LP Jr clips. These are very off the cuff and a bit sloppy at times. I lost my way a couple of times :D. Anyway, maybe you can get an idea of what the amp sounds like. I played plugged straight into the amp, through my ridiculous looking, but great sounding 80's snakeskin Steve Stevens Signature cab, loaded with 4x 1973 G12H.

You’re right about those speakers, they sound really good. I’ve been kinda jonesing for some G12H’s but if I got a second cab I’d like it to play nice with the g12m -20’s so I could go full stack. I think the H’s would over power it.

I'd say give it a try. I hear you, but getting a second cab of the same speakers is sorta redundant, might as well try something different. All of those old pics of Clapton and Hendrix sure show them mixing and matching G12m lead, bass and G12H cabs (no logo, "100" logo, "Bass" logo used together). Seemed to work for them? If you can swing it, I would recommend getting some old G12H's. Not only do they sound great, but if you don't love them (you probably will love them), you can at least sell them for what you paid for. I guess the only drawback is it could backfire if they are damaged. Or get some Scumbacks, those have a great resale value for new speakers and you can get 65 watters, to make sure that a 4x12 can handle your 100 watt head. I am thinking about replacing the two Scumback BM75's that I have in a 2x12 cab with something different. I don't really love them, too aggressive for my taste. I'm thinking I might try a pair of H75's out. Maybe even get the 100 watt version, so I can plug my new 100 watt head into that cab. You may have thought of all of these things already. Just making conversation I guess :D

I’ll probably do it. I just picked up a quad of 25 watt pulsonic T1221’s yesterday which I think will suit the way I’m running this amp a little better than what I’m using now. If I’m right I’ll sell the Heritage quad and look for a quad of g12h’s.

Ps, I forgot to say that I liked your amp as well. I would set it up exactly as you did with single coils - just the right amount of gain. Sounds really good in a band setting like that.

Good call on the speakers.

I really like the early G12Hs (1968 B cab) but don't dismiss the M version (T1511s) either.
I have x2 T1221 and x2 T1511 in my gigging 69 A cab and the other pairs of these quads in my sons 68 B cab.

Both cabs sound very good, IMO.

That seems like a good idea with the t1511’s. I would imagine the sensitivity being similar to the t1221?

Got all my parts from Valvestorm! Everything looks great, and I have to say the packing job was like art! One of the best packed shipments I have ever gotten, for any product. I am very impressed with the service and product from Valvestorm!

Still waiting on transformers, but I should have more than enough stuff to get a head start. I will start to post updates, once I get going. Getting excited!

Right on, keep us posted!

I put the g12m pulsonics (25 watt) on and it really made a good difference. I really feel they suit the amp (using humbuckers).

Nice, do you find them to be a bit smoother?

I have started my Super Bass build. I wired the heaters and then got busy with work this week, so I have not made any further progress. I will post some pics once I get a little more done (and possibly make mistakes  )

I am also going to convert my 1986 to JTM 50 spec. I got a black flag face plate from Rich and I am going to go to single preamp voltage dropper and I will have Dual 16uf and Dual 32uf can caps. That way I can fool around and either have everything be 32uf, or experiment with screens or PI down to 16uf. I'm going to stick with solid state rectifier, at least for now.
