Building a Super Reverb

Post by axeman » Fri Mar 13, 2020 9:56 am

Does anyone have experience building this amp? Not sure which capacitors to use, Mallory or orange drops. I’ll post a video on my progress.

Thanks

I've used both, not in super reverb, but a 1987 build. Frankly I can't hear the difference between similar rated capacitors. I prefer Mallory to Sprague; do not like the size of the ODs - ridiculously large for no apparent benefit.

I was thinking of using mallory capacitors, but they don't have all the odd values. I'll see if I can find them before I start to populate the board.

Hi, I used for a revision of Fender Vibroverb Model AA763 with EVM 15L speaker from 1963 the TAD Audio Caps from https://www.tubeampdoctor.com/en/tad-pr ... udio-caps/ . Those are very good sounding caps.

A majority of the capacitors I recently used in a Supro 1688 build were these Mallory film caps :
https://www.tubesandmore.com/products/c ... %3DMallory

I could not find all the capacitances either; Valco used some really odd ducks. Other than the pf ratings (I used ceramics for these) I found some film caps locally that worked fine (.003uF). I did not have to resort to ODs. The electrolytics were NTEs bought locally, or ICs for the power rail.

BTW the amp sounds nothing like LZ I. More like the Tyrannosaurus Rex of guitar amps as Leon C. describes it on The Gearpage.

Good luck with the Super. Cool amp I haven't heard one in years. There was a guy in a band that played a few places here back in the early 80's that had one. I don't think he ever turned it up past "2".

Thank you for all the info guys, I found some Mallory 150 400v in my garage that I had stored away. I have a .003uf also from a generic brand. I also have some black plate 6L6's and some RCA 12AX7 black plate and others from RCA. I'm using Hammond transformers and a chassis from Mojotone. The Mojotone chassis has some potential problems, the potentiometers set high in the hole, so wire dressing on the lugs of the pot will need some careful planning. I have the panels, but still looking for the front panel thats has the logo Super Reverb. That would be awesome.

Thanks again all.

Unfortunately, it will cost to much to have them delivered. Plus the Orange drops and Malleries are awesome.
