Blackie clone at my local GC....

Post by NY Chief » Wed Nov 15, 2006 3:41 pm

My bass player called last night to tell me that the local GC has one of Blackie clones (in a glass case.) He also said our "GC guy" would take it out if the case and "let me" play it. Said he has three guys who want it but can't sell it untill Thurs. Also said it is a great playering guitar. I'll report if I get a chance to play it.

Oh, the $$$$ ????

Yeah, I'd rather get into something like a '60-'64 Vintage Strat for that kinda dough. But, these will probably appreciate . . . for a while anyway.

I would take anything a GC employee says with a grain of salt.

LOL. I would tend to agree. My guess is they play and sound fine, but who is guing to gig a $20K replica guitar? I would think these would end up on the walls of rich guy's houses more as artwork and conversation pieces.

For 20K for a COPY of a guitar Clapton played it had better come with two years lessons from Clapton himself, 5 years front row center seats and transportation to all his shows, a party at his house to meet all his friends in the biz and oral sex (no, not from him  )

Next to his "Relic" guitars...
Realistically dump the same $$$ in a vintage LP that should appreciate a lot more steadily than that.. since your not gonna play it.

My guess is that ther won't be lines at GC around the block for these like the new Playstation 3    20K for this is way too much, SRV was 10K and limited to 100 guitars Rory,s guitar 2750. Fender & GC what are they thinking.... although you might see Steven Segal first in line for a Blackie

My $0.02 from another thread:
Yeah, I got the whole sales pitch last night. It's interesting: GC's previous Clapton remake - the "Crossroads 335", was a success and they apparently went up in value right away. That guitar had a street price of around $12,000 and they all sold immediately. Some made a 25% return the week after the release on ebay.

The Jeff Beck Nocaster recreation hasn't performed in the same way, however, and appears to be a marketing "miss".

But the business model for Fender and GC is of course the recreation of SRV's main strat. They made about 100 of those, and sold them for $10,000 each. Now I believe they regularly go for much more. Last night I played one with a retail price of $40,000.

So if they were doing only 100 of these at $22,000 (over 2% of the cost of their $1MM original Blackie), I could understand the economics. Or if they were doing 200 at $10,000. But GC and Fender are going for 4X multiples of the SRV project, and that spooks me just a bit. Basically twice as many guitars for twice as much money. I get it - this is Clapton and that was Beck. But the folks who bought the Beck Nocasters aren't seeing that thing go up in value at all.

Nashville's GC has pre-sold one already. It goes on display tomorrow at several stores. The marketing for this thing is great. Dig Fender's awesome website for this guitar here: http://www.fender.com/blackie/
