Absolutely not....i'm satisfied of my 36 sound simply cause is 36.....Frank have said " 34 accuately mimic 36 sound" "36 was a clone of 39, same mod on 2 different 1959" .....not me......and i believe that the sound are under the ear of all....Slash play nightrain with 34 on afd100 investigation and sound very similar to afd record.....not 3 different experiments but one only sound cloned in 3 different heads...2203 clone perfectly plexi sound....if you set 2203 on determinate way sound exactly the same of a plexi with more compression.....36 and 39 wasn't a superplexis.....was a Marshall/Fender crossover sound ...old plexis don't twang like 36......but fenders too.....isn't british sound....sound more Fender sound with Marshall bitepjoliver182 wrote:"The 3 tubes version of 36 is 34. .."
This is why you're still not satisfied with your #36 tone Benny. ..
#34 #36 and #39 are all different experiments in trying to achieve a super plexi tone at lower volumes...mainly because the 2203 amps failed in that respect.
Let go of #34 and look at Franks preferred way of modding Marshall's in the 80's and you will find better #36 accuracy.

Crossover sound don't want say Fender stages or Fenders stage value.....the final result is a crossover sound....the Levi intention was create a twang machine for humbuckers....so the amp sound very bright.....single coil twang always, humbuckers not....36 is a 34 with 10k added stage.....10k is a trebly stage so Frank have remove bright cap and add another shield trick on second stage for cut hiss and control the exagerate compression.....36 don't want 470n in 820ohm, without bright cap and with second shield trick have the same mid bass yet....many people mistake the way to make shield trick.....33pf isn't the right way.....so 36 and 34 don't sound in the right way.....use a cable or 33pf+68k or 33pf+33k......the lonely 33pf cut too highs and gain.....Levi don't was mod a plexi.....Levi was re-mod the Caswell 39.....Caswell 39 was a 2203 hot rod with added 10k stages.....but was too bright.....so Caswell have changed his mod on second time with a smooth stages, Levi was have re mod for make a less trebly mod using an old idea born with an old mod make for Billy Squier....if you want listen this mod is in Signs of Life album.....Billy have talk many times on it's mod.....the new FL mark 7 mod have first stage fender style on 3 tubes Marshall amp (i have try this on a 2203 horizontal input that Frank have on Rocket studios rentals in NY).....but isn't the 36 or 34 mod, it's a totally different mod with different voicing.....Frank have changed taste of mod the amp.....now create less bright mod like Caswell

I try the 34 with vintage v30 and les paul and give my a sound similar to Afd playing with eq but the Afd sound is a bit fat compressed and dark.In my opinion 34 is a bit thin and too bright. Now i want work on 34 to give more afd sound, i just cut off bright cap and install 680n on 820r and sound better but a bit thin and with too treble. I want try cuttung 150k from gain pot and restored treble peak 470k/470p
For afd sound on #34 i use this eq P5 B6.5 M4 T2

36 isn't really more fat of 34.....cut mids on eq (3,5-4) and sound exactly fat in the same way....for compression 10k added stage is the answer.....

Tell me about those amps.
I’ve got 10 or 12 of these heads that I’ve had since the early ‘70s. I have a few that are a bit later, but the ones I use are the old Super Lead 100s. Frank Levi reworked these for me over the course of many nights of creative abuse. He’d start out with an idea and I’d try it, and then we’d just keep going until we got what we wanted. I love the way these sound because they don’t compress. They have the classic Marshall tone, but don’t compress into that midrange ‘box.’ I set the volume around 2, but they sound like they’re on 12—they’re incredibly powerful.

After Tim Caswell left SIR, a gentleman named Dave took his place. Frank Levi joined SIR just before Dave’s departure.
Tim Caswell’s modded #39 sat on the shelf, unused. Frank convinced Glen Buckley (head of Q.C. department) to let him re-work #39 an install his own mod.
Frank removed all of the components that Tim Caswell had added on the 1st tube of #39 including the switching capability. He then installed his own mod and #39 FL SuperKill #1 was born. This is the #39 that everyone loves and is talking about.
Due to the popularity of #39, Glen asked Frank to modify #36 to be the same as #39. Thus #36 FL SuperKill was born. Both #39 and #36 were almost always out on rentals. SIR needed one more amp like #39 and #36. The only available amp was #34, a 2203 Marshall. Frank modified #34 to accurately mimic the 39/36 sound. Thus the #34 FL CUSTOM was born
In the ‘70s Frank continued with a few mods until he met Billy Squier who convinced Frank to get serious about his mods. Billy’s band, Piper, had 3 guitarists with Marshalls and Billy wanted the amps to sound different than one another. Frank did the job. He credits Billy Squier as the man that made him take Marshall modding seriously… It was no longer just a hobby.

I thought you were still tweaking your circuit Benny? How many years had it been? Do you still have 0.1u presence cap and a non-stock tone stack?

A 2203 does not sound like a cranked plexi to me Benny. #34 doesn't sound anything like #36! How can you even say that?? Nothing on the afd100 video sounds like the AFD album to me...
How does #36 have twang like a fender?! It's sleazy and squashy like a cranked plexi!
If you start your #36 mod with the #34 spec, you've already changed too much...in some respects even starting with a 2203 spec is too many unnecessary changes in one go!

2203 is a bright plexi channel with 10k added stages....same circuit same all.....if you put a master volume on 10 and use gain like master sound exactly the same with little bit compression added and little bit less highs....
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LYwxKqehs9Y
so in the same way 34 and 36......10k don't change the voicing but add bright....
you don't ear twang on sweet child intro? or in a paradise city solo? How does #36 have twang like a fender?! It's sleazy and squashy like a cranked plexi!

so, if the frank mods do not compress like Billy said why add a 10k stage? 10k compress!
