Hello, New Member and huge EVH fan...

Post by craigbeckta » Tue May 01, 2012 10:52 am

Hello from Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada...

New member here and huge EVH fan.

I'm planning on painting a Peavey Wolfgang Special
to look like Eddie's Red Stripe Frankenstein.

Any advice on the best paint to use that is available
in the Halifax, Nova Scotia area?

I hear Nitro is not available in spray cans in Canada.

I appreciate any advice and tips.

Thanks,

Craig

Hello and welcome aboard !

I'd say use ebay. Lots of nitro spray cans available in different colors. Guitar ReRanch is also great. Whether Ed used it or not (Nitro), it is faster and easier. This stuff is only shipped ground.

Good luck with it.

Hey Craig, no you can't get it in Canada from what I've heard. There may be a place in Quebec but I can't find the address. If you go to Lee Valley in Bayers Lake, you can get Nitro in a can, just not spray cans. Because Nitro dries fast, you can actually apply it with a brush, multiple layers, sand and buff. Works well as I've done it numerous times. It's toxic as Halifax harbour by the way, so make sure you use it in a well ventilated area.

The Duplicolor from Canadian Tire works well for the guitar stuff. Just don't use enamel. Has to be the acrylic. Don't use Duplicolor clearcoat. Its not meant to harden like nitro does.

Thanks for the tips.

A lot of people seem to like the Duplicolor.

What {Red} would work best for a Frankenstrat?

Also, I heard Watco available at Home Depot
works for the clear coat.

The Cardinal red, seems to be a favourite.

You need to head over to the Halen.com forums for replica info. They are into replicas the way this forum is (or some would say use to be  ) into tone.

Hey,

Is this the stuff from Lee Valley?

Can you apply that over Duplicolor Perfect Match?

Thanks,

Craig

Yes and yes. Multiple thin coats. Using the brush method, I've done up to 20 before. Wetsand from 1000,1500,2000 grit. Buff with Turtlewax swirl remover from Canadian Tire.

Thanks,

Can you also use the Prevail Sprayer
to apply it?

Or is it better to use a brush?

Is Watco Clear a good option?

Or is the stuff from Lee Valley
better?

I guess, I still need to wait 30 to
60 days prior to wet sanding?

Is that correct?

Thanks for the welcome.

Never used the Watco myself so I don't know. The Nitro dries very quickly. You really only need to wait a few days if you apply very thin coats. It dries to touch in 30 minutes. I use the small black foam tipped brushes from CDN Tire. Discard after one use. Wetland with a small sanding block. I use a small square pencil eraser.
I don't know about the sprayer. I get great results without using one. Spraying nitro is extremely toxic. You have to have a paint booth or a well vented room. That's why the spray cans are difficult to find in Canada.

Thanks a ton for the PM and info.

Here's a Wolfgang I painted last week.

Paint Duplicolor Pefect Match

Universal Black
Olympic White
Super Red II

Clear coating will start soon with
the Deft Clear.

Also staring a Franky Replica shortly.

Thanks again.

You have some "orange peel" effect. You need to wet sand that a little before the clear. Looks pretty good.
