EVH franky broken pickup

Post by bmf5150 » Mon Aug 13, 2012 3:44 am

so they say that EVH frankenstien pickup is broken,with one of the coils shorted out?anyone tried replicating that?from what i been reading after finding this video is that the dimarzio eric johnson dp212 is a humbucker pickup that sounds like i single coil.i found this guys video using one and really nails that broken pickup sound.he mentions metroamp,so wondering if he is a member here??here is his video..

http://youtu.be/KGeJsMdBrzw" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

for reference here is EVH in 83 where u can hear the broken pickup.

is it me or does the pickup make it sound like it has alot more gain?

The "broken" pickup thing have always intrigued me, to the point I had a custom pickup wound for me.
I didn't go all the way and have one coil almost dead, but I'd say some of the same characteristics are there, the pickup is 11k total, with one coil 4k , the other 7.
And it's my favorite humbucker ever. I'm a single coil guy at hear, and this pickup give me that "zing" in the top end I love, and it cleans up better with my guitar volume than any humbucker I've tried.

I have a few clips, but they are much more polished and lack the tone of a cranked Marshall begging for mercy.... :)
The 5150 III sure is more "polite", but here they are:

It would be cool to try something even more mismatched.

I think what has happened is the pickup is now letting more high end out compared to when it was a shaved high end humbucker...so it has more highs than a regular paf but retains most of the output..the amp is tuned for more highs anyways and who knows what else..magic formula..perceived higher gain. It sure does sound fender single coil twangy when he lowers the volume ......but when he turns it up.. :shock: :shock: :shock: :shock: that aint no stock plexi tone.

Even tho the coil is broken, the field isn't...so physically it might not be connected but electrically it is....like a dummy capacitor ..actually that is exactly what is happening ....dc is blocked but ac isn't :wink: ...so instead of looking at dc resistance and reporting 0 ohms..the experts should be looking at the capacitance and inductance of the dead coil to accurately reproduce it.. :thumbsup:

A capacitor stores energy also, affects the tone etc.

Had to sell it 3 years ago when I was jobless and broke. Had to pay the rent....
Of course I landed a steady job a few months later, but that's how it is.... Oh well. :)
Now I'm dead set of owning another Marshall soon, but will most likely go for a replica, the good old stuff is just too expensive. But I got some serious money for the 68', that's for sure. :)

all you gotta do is use a duncan custom-custom and wire it to this wiring.
http://www.seymourduncan.com/support/sc ... c=sum96tip" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

http://www.seymourduncan.com/support/ch ... pinasplit/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

this duncan mod allows you to power down one of the coils gradually,partially or all the way off
I used a custom-custom and set the knob on about 6-7 and it sounds very VH, much more so than a stock pu does unless it is a 1977 duncan sh5 custom :mrgreen:
anyway what most forget is that ed's "broken" pu was a odd one it had one coil working normal and the other pratically shut down,it still bucked most of the hum so if you use the duncan spin a split and set the pot to about 2-3 it will give you a real good idea of eddies pu tone.

Stan you will like it and the best part is that when the pot is on ten it has no effect of the pu. so if you dont like it at first you can use it just for clean stuff. I really dug the way it made the duncan custom-custom sound like a old PAF,stock it has no clang,chime or bite but when you roll off the pot wit this mod to say 6-7 those elements start to emerge from a pu that before was unable to even do that tone? prety cool on seymours part for this mod :thumbsup:

Hey guys i know stan owns one but i just bought a MCP 2nd degree black belt.
I have heard so many great things about this one that i pulled the trigger and got a used zebra one to check out.
I remember stans ATBL clip where he demo'ed all these diff pu's and the MCP BB was by far the best sounding through his exact rig. here it is,
http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=7782093" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
stan if you did not want this clip posted i will remove it and please accept my apology,i just wanted to let others hear the BB in action :hairband: :thumbsup: here is the EVH frankenstein also by stan
http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=10947477" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I think the BB has it all over the frank :rock: and the Voodoo 59 which is very impressive!

Sorry guys,I'm no rockstah or Pete thorn on the guitar!the 2nd degree black belt is the best vh pickup I have ever played,I wana get a 4 conductor version and try that mod where u turn off or down the coil !dave Friedman voiced that pickup for that tone!helps Im sure Dave has played EVH amp and probably heard his pickup in his guitar!

cool stan thanks! Motrock bought one a while back now and he was flipped out over it too! He had a MCP custom PAF that i bought off of him and he tod me the BB destroys the other MCP! so i am stoked like a MOFO to get this and play!
Some dont beleive that a certian pu will push you to play a certain way but i have found IME that some really do. like the older JB or old customs make me riff a lot more precise than say a 59 or a pearly gates.
Stan is the 2nd BB on the hotter side of things,i know it has more heat than the duncan or voodoo 59's

here is a good thread on the MCP 2nd BB
