Marshall Superbass heads. They say basically the same internals? True?

Post by daneswede1 » Tue Jul 03, 2018 12:09 am

I was told that the Late 1960s through the early 1970s Marshall Superbass heads were basically built all the same internally i.e Transformers, caps, chokes, boards, etc.
Unlike the Marshall Superleads.
Is there truth to this statement?
All these vintage amps are very expensive Superbass or not. I notice as of 2018
I notice some guys who are out there touring or clubbing, use the Metro amps for the amps reliability.

I know one guy who who has a 100 watt darn near mint condition 1969 Superbass. He has a 1967 Fender combo. The Black panel Super Pro I believe its called.

A long time ago the guy that created "The Time Machine Boost" Pedal had the 1967 Super Pro and a 100 Watt 72' Marshall Superlead. Super Nice guy. I got one of those pedals from him long time back. Great pedal.
Anyway, Just wondering if the old Superbass heads were all built the same for a certain stretch of years? Tx.

The Super Bass changed very little from 1969 thru very early 1971. The only real change was the negative feedback resistor (from 27K to a 47K) during the first quarter of 1970 but both were still feed from the Speaker jacks. During the first quarter of 1971 Marshall started experimenting with the feed for the NFB resistor (47K) from the Speaker jacks to either the 16-ohm or the 8-ohm tap on the output Selector. I also believe that sometime in 1971 they changed the grid stopper resistors from two 1K5 to the four 5K6 setup.

I picked up a used 'Great Dane' plexi-clone of a 1969 Super Bass on CL. Like a 100-watt Metro kit-build using all MojoTone parts. Top quality build. Point-to-point, hand-wired. JJ EL-34 tubes. Somebody added a post-phase-inverter master volume. Sounds like AC/DC meets Led Zeppelin. Paid $550 for it. Worth every penny and then some!

Looks like a nice clean build.
You got a great deal.
Doubt you could buy the parts for that?
