HB sized P-90s

Post by daniel » Mon Nov 15, 2004 7:27 pm

Has anyone heard any of the various humbucker sized P-90s. I'd like to know how much they actually sound like a real P-90 as I am a huge fan of P-90s in les pauls.

I've heard some of the Kent Armstrong P-90's and they are really hard to beat for the price. I'm genereally a "pick-up snob"...more money= better pickups, but Kent is doing something right...They P90s sound wonderful, and his PAF clones sound better than any Duncan I've heard, and almost as good as Fralin.

The Cheapest retail place I've found them are at :

I checked out the kent armstrong pickups. They definitely seem like a good deal but is there such a huge price difference between the covered and uncovered pickups?

I'm using the Semour Duncan PH-1's in a Hamer and they are definitely cool sounding.

That's funny. I ordered a set of Harmonic Design Z90's for my 1981 Tokai Love Rock Gold Top to replace the Gotoh PAF's that are in there and was about to start a thread on HB size P90's. Looks like you beat me to it, Daniel!

I ordered the HD Z90's because of the very cool reviews on various forums and on HC but I haven't heard them yet. From what I gathered the Z90 is a different take on the P90 and therefore not a 'true' P90. It's less midrange-heavy and crisper, more mellow and dynamic sounding. Some say it sounds like a giant strat pickup!

Sounds like the pickup for me. I'll get back to you guys when they're in my Jap LP!

Lindy Fralin makes a HB-sized P90 - I have a pair in my 335. These pickups made me keep the guitar.. I have always liked 335s but been frustrated by the lack of clarity amped compared to the acoustic tone. Now my 335 sounds amazing - like taking a blanket off it! Still have the fat trebles but the bass strings are twangier and clearer, almost piano-esque.

Just great pickups.

Also, he told me he has just tooled up for a humbucking P90 that will fit in a HB hole. It uses two offset coils like a P-bass pickup. So it's still kinda single coil but no hum! And 95% P90 tone he reckons. That will be interesting...

i recently got a set of the seymour duncan phat cats and installed in my artcore(the model with the bigsby) and am quite happy with them. Ibanez artcore are unbeatable for the price I'm just not a fan of the stock pickups. Now that these are in there its a tone machine.
