Great Product Recommendation

Post by flemingmras » Sun May 30, 2004 10:25 am

OK guys I tried out a WAY cool new product this weekend that George had told me about. It's a guitar component but nonetheless cool.

And yes I actually modded one of my Les Pauls with this mod.

The Planet Waves Auto Trim Tuning Machines

These are locking tuners that automatically trim the excess string off the end of the tuner when you tune the strings. WAY WAY COOL! I got 3 sets of them but haven't installed the other two yet.

The bad thing is is that the tuner holes in a Les Paul headstock aren't big enough, so you have to use a hand reamer to enlarge them. I don't recommend drilling them because you'll chip the paint or even worse possibly break the headstock as the wood toward the edge of the headstock is quite thin.

I highly recommend this modification to any guitar!

I got the chrome ones since that's the only color that Guitar Center had.

The only other drawback to these is that you have to feed the string through one certain way. If you accidentally feed it through the wrong way you'll cut the wrong end of the string as I found this out the hard way.

Here's my contribution:

Bore oil for your fret board.

You can get it at woodwind shops and it's used for the "bore" of clarinets. Works great and doesn't dry out the wood like lemon oil. Pretty cheap too!
Gear:
'74 Super Lead rebuilt with '68 metro board and old stock mustards.
'73 Super Lead
'68 Basketweave with pre rola G12Ms
'70 Basketweave

I'll jump in:

superglue

On day 5 when your caluses are pealing off an you've got 3 sets still to go. Pour some super on your finger tips (one at a time or they'll stick together. Let it dry and flatten it with a nail file. Gets you through the night.

George

Oh yeah, and always try to "borrow" a couple bar towels for guiatr polishing.

Dont think Ide like those tuners all that much seeing how all but one of my guitars have Floyd tremolos and I string them ball end at the tuners. Here is a little contribution. Small sponge (one of those ones you get in a two pack at the grocery store) cut to roughly 2"x3". Place it behind your tremolo springs(works on floyds or fender types) to eliminate any spring noise from your guitar.

Yeah i've heard of SRV using superglue. I've got a really rad thing that i do to my strings...using Brawny towel.

I really like the sort of stick feel of strings when they've been used over 2 days, but i like the tone of fresh strings. So i've come to a compromise. I noticed that new unwound strings almost have a glossy finish to them. So what i do is take a paper towel and rapidly wipe the strings till it starts to squeek. I do this on my 1st, 2nd, and 3rd strings. It sounds really crazy and off the wall, but the strings sound brand new and have super grip for awesome grabbage!!!! I've been doing this for a long time now and am digging it. Have any of you guys ever heard of anyone doing this?

I havent heard of wiping your strings to get them to grab before. I personally like using fretease on my strings. When my strings start grabbing Is when I apply more fretease.

I just change my strings before every show. I love the tone and feel of new strings and I'm very hard on them to begin with to where I can't get 2 shows out of them!
