Ridiculous Vox AC4TV Mod

Post by somethin'else » Sat Jun 26, 2010 1:18 am

As if I don't have anything better to do. It's kinda tuff to throw the 100w Metro Plexi around for on-the-fly living room jams, so I picked up a Vox AC4TV a couple years ago. Good enough for throwing around.

Then I built this 1x12 extension cab to use with it, a TV front Fenderish type with tilt back legs, etc. The Vox cuts out the lame made for Vox by Celestion 10" speaker when running another cab, so I thought... throw the chassis in the extension cab and just run the 1x12. Only one thing to carry.

It's 18 x 18 x 12, sounds pretty big, and the best part? A Scumback M75 8) That, a Mullard 12ax7, TAD EL84 (nice tube!), replace the two caps with SoZos, and Fuggeddaboudit

Everything short of the Mercury Magnetics Upgrade kit for this thing. Maybe another day (year).
Pardon the late night fuzzy cell phone pics... notice empty old VietVox-particleboard shell sitting in the background :(

Looks cool! They actually half the output by spec'ing a 16 ohm load. It will put 5k on the primary with a 8 ohm speaker that's about what an EL84 is looking for in class A operation. I could only imagine what that would sound through this cab of yours. I run mine into a G12H30 loaded cab (8 ohm) for recording. I would suggest adding a 1k-2.7k screen resistor if you're planning to run it with an 8 ohm cab for extended periods to get longer life out of the tube.
