Voodoo amps AOR Help

Post by neoclassical » Sat Nov 20, 2010 5:05 pm

I'm going to call Voodoo Amps monday, but thought I'd ask here for opinions as well. My modded AOR 100 started blowing HT fuses in the studio. I didn't know he did this, but the engineer at the studio we record with after it blew a second fuse stuck a 2 amp fuse in instead of a 1 amp and it of course blew that fuse and let a puff of smoke out the top. Now that I got a look at the power tubes and the sockets the first power tube has a burn mark and carbon on/around pin 3 and the socket looks like it chipped at pin 3 and looks burnt. It now blows the proper 1 amp fuses when I take it out of standby with power tubes in. It does not blow fuses with the power tubes out and in standby. Also when my drummer packed the amp in his car next to our other guitarist's amp he bent my bottom control's (like a resonance control) pot shaft and it looks like he got the solder joint to pop off the ground buss wire. I took the amp out of the shell and I don't see any other evidence of burned components. Is this something that could be fixed with a retube and bias and possibly a new power tube socket since it was probably the tubes going in the first place along with the bottom control replaced? What could I be looking at if there is more damage than just that? I know that amp isn't in front of you, but I'm on a VERY tight budget right now. I have my modded TSL to get me through gigs for now, but this is my main amp and has "the sound".

Man, that doesn't sound good. I'll let the more experienced people chime in here, but I certainly wouldn't have let him put a 2a fuse in there. This is effectively allowing twice the amount of current through the B+ line. A big rush in current may have burnt out your power tube screen grid resistors and in the process could have taken out an OT - hence the smoke, prior to blowing the fuse......

Sounds like a tube died, and hopefully didn't take anything with it.

You ought to get the screen resistor checked out, and it sounds like the socket will need replaced if there is carbon tracking there. But any further than that, you ain't really going to know until you get some more tubes.

Always carry spares, and spare fuses. Chances are that way, you won't need 'em.
So I like purple, okay!!!!!!

Get a new tube, a new drummer and a new engineer... :P just kidding, man. That's what the screen grid resistors are there for according to Groove Tube's Aspen Pittman- to take the heat when the tube dies, so the amp doesn't get damaged. I replaced one once for a buddy in his Peavey 60/60 power amp (6L6's) and the amp came right back to life. Good luck!

Hi Adam,

you should follow chrisom's recommendations exactly and fire this so called "engineer"!

But:
- install at first a new tube socket (because the carbon trace)
- buy a flightcase for your Amp!

Regards

Robert
