I have a friend who owns a local company servicing various electronic equipment. i.e. Foosball tables, pinball machines, and the like. He's big into high end audio and worked for years as the head projectionist for the local movie theater. He comes across alot of really old stuff and gave me a brief description of a rack mount system he pulled from the theater years ago. He's interested in what the thing is worth (collector value etc.). I'll post specifics when he get them to me of course, but here's the brief rundown I know so far....
These are power amps only, but he might have the separate pre's also.
5 amps total. all circa 1950's
amps 1-4: quad 6L6 in dual push pull, tube regulated, and some other tubes such as input, and a few i never heard of before. He states his testing has placed them as being biased for roughly 60% to 70% of power. All high end oil filled trannies.
Amp 5: twin 6L6 in push pull, same specs as above.
He explains that 1-4 were used to power the quadraphonic audio in the viewing room, which sported HUGE speaker cabinets Complete with one 15", one 10" and a liquid cooled horn tweeter with full crossovers using hand wound coils. Amp #5 (Control room monitor) powered 2 smaller speakers in the control room. He also explained that when he worked for the theater, the amps were never ran higher than 1/2 volume and any louder would have been very uncomfortable to the customers.
This is a full rack-mount system of 5 amps. He said he had seen non working single amps on ebay, but that this is, in his opinion different because it is all 5 amps, in the original rack setup, and they all work.
So, As I said I'll post more specifics when I get them, but was just curious if anyone is familiar with these kinds of HiFi amps of the 50's and what their collector etc value might be.
Thanks in advance
Py
Edit...
Here's the monitoring amp he mentions. (His is a MI-9335B)
And the four power amps used.
Also, I found anebay listingfor a 7 channel version.
He hasn't sent me pics yet, I will post them as soon as he does. His has all the covers and meters, as well as the switch control (Controls which channel you are monitoring in the Projector room), tube driven filter units and some other things I've never heard of.
What is it?
Completed amps from Fender, Orange, Hiwatt, Vox, etc.
