Kent ba-170

Post by Doug H » Sun Dec 07, 2008 7:50 pm

scored this old amp from my Uncle. popped it open and replaced the 10uf filter on the preamp with a 20 I had lying around. Sounds pretty sweet, a little bassy though. It's got 2 12ax7s and a pair of 6v6s. I can't find a schematic for it, anyone know of any old Fender amp that shares this tube layout?

gotta love old PTP amps, I've got a couple questions if anyones interested

Those old Japanese radial 600v caps, are they keepers or should I zozofy the amp?

That big ceramic connecting both 6v6s in the middle, any clues as to that arrangment?

I just realized it's got 3 peramp tubes, one was missing, heh heh, so I could plexify this thing once I figure out the power section. Bad idea? The circuit is greek to me from every angle, I almost think it'd be easier to reqire it completely than to try and get some more treble out of the existing layout. But that depends on being able to apply some 6v6 schematic somewhere to the ecisting trannys, and it looks to me like this power section is something completely different than my marshall.

sorry for the crappy picture, any insight would be appreciated.

I don't get it, there's a 10k and some cap in series connecting the leads to the OT. Apparently nothing on the cathode and 470ks off the grids that just go to another 470 to ground instead of some kind of negetive bias supply.

Got it sorted out, managed to "deluxe" it pretty good. It's a bit saggy, but sounds wicked, I've never owned a Neil Young amp before :) :)

I'm gong to build a deluxe style combo box around it with a new chassis etc...anyone know what sort of wood I should use for that, 5/8 birch?

You can see why I want to give it a new home, it was hit pretty hard with the ugly stick. While that's sort of cool in a wa I'd like somehting more weildy.

I just bought one of these too and it's very well made.
The 6V6s' 10K into the .005 is a conjunctive filter that smooths out the highs across the primary.
