speakers for Metro 100 watter?

I'm thinking about making the leap from Fenderland and getting a Metro 100 watt head. I'd like to run it through a 2X12 cab that I have for a while, at least until I could get a 4X12. I think I'd like the Celestion G12H or G12M, but unfortunately two of them they can't handle that many watts..

Of course, I know I could try the Celestion Vintage 30s, but I'm not sure that midrange would work for me. I think Warren Haynes is usually a Vintage 30 guy. I dig his tones on the new live ABB CDs. I think he played a plexi on that. Actually I dig Duane Allman's old plexi tones too, and he used JBL D120Fs in his cabs.

Does anybody have any speaker suggestion that will work in a 2x12 cab with 100 watter?

Thanks!

Sorry, I didn't get my name with that post..

Does anybody know of any speakers that will handle a 100 watter in a 2x12 that compare with the G12M and G12H? Also, I'd like to hear from any Vintage 30 users out there.

Thanks!

A lot of people really like the Vintage 30's. I find them good sounding only when you really hit them hard. At lower volumes they just seem too directional to me.

They do seem to break in too. I like them better after they've been abused for a while.

Some people like (2) of them in a 4-12 with (2) greenbacks or G12H's.

Right now I'm looking at options for a 2x12.. It's too bad a couple Greenbacks wouldn't work. What about pulling 2 power tubes when using a 100 watter with 2 Greenbacks? Would that keep me from frying them? I really think I want a 100 watter, because I can see a 4x12 in my future. I already have a 2x12, and I'd want to use until I got a 4x12 and after for some jigs.

Thanks!

Oh yeah.. It's not like I'm gonna be running the amp hard all the time anyway. I'll probably use a Power Brake most, if not all, the time. I just wouldn't want to take any chances with frying speakers.

The G12H sounds like it might be worth further investigation. How do you describe it?

Thanks!

If you think it's Greenbacks you want but are worried about the wattage, call Ted Weber and get two of his ceramic Silver Bell speakers in the 50 watt rating. You'll love them, they're generally cheaper to buy than the Greenbacks/G12H30's/V30's, but darker and warmer than the current Greenback reissues.
He is generally a little conservative on wattage ratings, two 50 watt Bells should take the 100 watt amp like real men, but you can ask him to be sure!

I'm another supporter of 2x12 cabs having Vintage 30's. They will give you great cut and punch. The only downside i see in these speakers is that they really don't sound good but only sound good when you are giving them hell....and giving speakers hell is a good thing!

I'm going to do some checking on the Webers, but Celestions are my frame of reference. What about pulling two tubes from the 100 watter when using a 2x12 loaded with G12M Greenbacks or G12Hs? Will that keep me from frying speakers? Just throwing out ideas..

Dang! I did log in, but I'm still showing up as "Guest"..

There's sooo many speakers to choose from. I wish they were all good..

Anybody else out there tried a Weber Ceramic Blue Dog?

If you're going to be using the power brake I'd say get the ones you prefer the sound of. Just be carefull with them.

Besides reissues are readily available. And if should damage one, Weber does expert recones for under $50. And they probably sound better with the recone.

I'd throw some reissue G12H's in there and rock.

That's what I'm thinkin'.. I think I want to keep more of an "old school" Marshall tone, and I may end up jerkin' the speakers out of the 2x12 and putting them in a 4x12 when I get one. I understand the V30s are really damn loud too. Don't want the senior citizens I play with to start violently convulsing..

I think a power brake would be in order. So would pulling two tubes still be a good idea to keep from frying any speakers?

How do G12Ms and G12Hs compare? Who has tried them both?

Youse guys are really helpful around here!! :)

So will puuling two power tubes and using a power brake keep me from frying two G12H speakers in a 2x12?

Don't know why it wouldn't, but if you do, please enlighten me..

Spanks!
