Fender Showman project

Post by Xplorer » Sat Oct 02, 2010 6:35 am

Hi !

i realise that it'll be a lot of money, if i want to get an original Fender 62 showman, blonde.
i love this one with this harmonic vibrato, heard in electric ladyland. i like this particular clean fender tone.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lfqjhAH6gTc" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
( also this one heard into voodoo child )

the circuit is the 6G14 or 6G14A , http://www.ampwares.com/amp.asp?id=84" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

and with this : http://www.ampwares.com/schematics/showman_6g14a.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
i think i'm gonna do a clone myself. But, i'm starting now to collect some informations on this amp, and if anyboady has one, with some pictures perhaps, that would help a lot !
i don't know yet if some parts would be unavailable, or too expensive, the transformers maybe ? ...

yes, if some have pictures of the circuit, that would help me to determine , step by step, everything i'd need, every type of component. with some pictures, i could also see if there are some variations from one to another, and compare it with the schematic.
Some knowledge about fender amps is also very much appreciated ; )

Thanks !
Adrien

why do you believe jimi used the 6g14 - because of kramer's claim about a small 30w fender?

not 30 watts, 100 watts. ( ?? ) but yes, kramer told about this, and hearing some blonde old fenders like this one :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ybpWCl21dE" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

well, i like it, and think i could get some tones i'd like.

i'm starting to get excited to do this project ; )

do you think i'm wrong, tonewisely ?

its kramer who describes the ladyland amps as a small, blonde 30w fender in Setting the record straigh. Obviously, he is referring to an amp which never existed. but he stresses that it was a small fender and that it wasn't loud.

yeah, i guess that in his remembrance, things are a bit different from the reality.

Actualy, jimi had a twin reverb, in 1965, and a dual showman in 1968 ( serial 99110624, owned later by al hendrix ) . Also a Fender Champ 5F1 ( C11239 ) , sold by mitch mitchell at sothebys, 05/08/1987 ( lol, my birthday when i was 7 ) .

But there was a little 30 watts amp, a "burns", from 1966

it's said also that jimi used a twin reverb for most of his recordings at the electric studio ( not true, not most of the recordings )

don't know why i thought about a showman amp ( anyway, it seems cool ) , maybe because of eddie kramer.

in the electric ladyland guitar parts, i hear something between a vibrato, and a tremolo. could be the harmonic vibrato ( actualy, playing with the volume ) that i hear in these old 62 showman, bandmasters, concert ... sounds beautiful. later it was an opto vibrato. not the same.

Check out the Gomez Surfer: http://gomezamps.com/surfer.html

I have four Blonde Bandmasters (6G7-A) with the Harmonic Vib-----three are in good working condition and i'm in the process of rebuilding the other--- the Harmonic Vib is truely something special for Vib fans---no other Vib circuit i've ever heard (quite a few Including Magnatone) does what it does.
An orig 6G14(a) would be difficult to find and would be expensive----i've read that building this Harmonic Vib circuit can be tricky---i'll find out with my Blonde Bandmaster rebuild-----this one was in such poor condition that it needed to be stripped to the chassis----i'll be using all new push-back cloth insulation wire because the insulation is so degraded on the orig wire----i'll see how many orig board components are still usable................gldtp99

ooooh ! what a nice amp ! i've just check the gomez amp, cool ... maybe too much money for me and it's fun to buld a clone , but ...
i'd just have to replace the frontplate, and add a fender flat logo ; )

well, yes, the harmonic vibrato, i love it. it seems to be simply some more components, a circuit ... no big mystery on the schematic. ( ?? )

i could hesitate with the blonde bandmaster , that has the same harmonic vibrato. if you'd be willing to help me, i'd love to study a blonde bandmaster clone project too, and some infos and pictures, and anything about your best blonde bandmaster would be very cool.

i have to find the right board clone, the right transformers, the right components, the right schematic related to your amp, hoping that they would both be the same components and values.
stuffs like this.

good luck on your restoration project. i think i'd love to clone your amp ; )
