brown super rebirth..

Post by strat71 » Wed Nov 17, 2010 3:30 am

Hi,
already posted on another forum but this one seems to have more technicians... and that's what i need...
i'm trying to rebirth this fender brown super from 62...

there's a lot of things to fix here are my concerns, see if you can help...

1. the speakers are gold oxford 10K5, heard they are not bad but one of them has tear in the paper and i'm not sure the other will handle a full playing gig. do you thinkl i should recone? or should i go with weber speakers?
don't know which model i could buy: 10F125, 10F150 or other alternatives?? suggestion?
which weber is the direct replacement of 10K5? which one would you recommend and why? i'll play rock blues music and will go for ceramic...

2. the power tranny seems to be changed since the serial is 6068--, from 68 i'm afraid, i measured the B+ it gives 356 0 356 for the secondary unloaded and almost 500V with just the GZ34..
do you think it's the normal voltage i should find on this amp or should i consider changing the tranny? MM direct replacement read 380 0 380, i'm not sure i want to have a higher voltage, the schematic put 5881 in those amps, but i know they don't handle too much voltage..???

3. the tolex has been paintedin black and de-painted, the tolex is thus in a very sad shape, should i recover it or not? or is it an heresy?

ps: i know i'll have to check all the electronic, already done that on numerous amps. by the way, the main caps have been changed, i'll check all critical components before firing up: power resistors, electrolitic caps, etc... i'll change also the death cap arrangment bu putting a ground to chassis and a pot to set up the bias...

anyway, thanks for all the informations and comments you could post here...

I had one of these about 10 years ago. Nice amp. If it were mine , I would change the power cord, put in new 5881's, and a pair of Jensens from Weber and play that thang.

Hi Ben,
I prefer stock, especially on old classics. If you can, try to repair that cone yourself following Gerald Weber's trick. It's quite easy to do with some household paper towel and elmo's glue. Just split the towel in twain, use just enough to cover the crack over its entire surface, put some glue on the towel and apply on one side of the cone. Do the same for the other side of the cone. Let the thing dry overnight and (for aesthetics) spray a little flat black paint on the repaired area and you're done!
