Weber amp builds

Post by airshippilot » Wed Dec 15, 2010 11:00 pm

Has anyone built a Weber kit? I looked up a couple of youtube videos and there was a lot of hum on the couple of amps that people had posted videos of. I really like the idea of building a Hi-watt or Orange. Anyone's experience would be helpful. My Metro build is quiet as a church mouse when your not playing- I don't want to try another kit if I can't get the same performance.

I'm building a customized weber twin and an ac30 now. I would blame the builder for hum, not weber

And if in doubt: ask Larry where the problem is (mostly) sitting- he knows... :whistle:

I helped a friend finish a Weber 18w. It wasn't bad but you do get what you pay for. Some of the parts like switches, jacks and tube sockets are cheap but they work. Some of Weber's circuits or layouts are not 100% accurate so if that is a concern, make sure you compare them with schematics or accurate layouts.

I plan on building one of their AC30 kits in the future.

I have a friend who built a Weber plexi kit and he said the parts quality was quite poor. OTOH, I built a plexi50 from Ceriatone and really couldn't be happier. The amp sounded great built stock, but it really woke up when I started tinkering. Nothing wrong with it stock, the filtering values were accurate to the schematic, but that left it kind of stiff. I splurged for the Sozo caps and the PPIMV, which is Lar/Mar. All the parts seem pretty good stuff. Solid-feeling Alpha pots, heavy-duty switches, carbon-comp resistors, really an excellent platform for a tweaker.

It would be pretty cool if metro came up with a hi-watt kit

I built the Weber Champ kit a while back, no complaints there. It was a fine kit for the money.

The Weber Champ stack: http://forum.metroamp.com/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=28310" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

There's some hum, but not anything I would call out of the ordinary. I play it between 2 and 5 o'clock mostly.

I wouldn't compare Metro to Benz either. Having owned an SLK from new for 9 years, looking after it, and still watching it rot away in front of my eyes, couple with a crappy manual gearshift that kept breaking and various electronic faults that kept creeping in. Personally I think that Mercedes are a complete load of shite. Give me a solid Golf over any merc, any day. But for now, I'll stick with the beemer and the Volvo.
So I like purple, okay!!!!!!
