Modding a Sovtek Mig 50 Amp

Post by Menso » Thu Dec 15, 2005 2:22 am

hi there!
i´m new and i need some help with my amp.

i have this sovtek mig 50 guitar amp. it´s something like a russian copy of the plexi head(at least that´s what i was told, never played a plexi head).
it´s build like a tank and the sound has a lot of balls!!
my "problem" is just, that i need a master volume mod for it. when i´m playing at low volume i have an electro harmonix big muff and a boss sd-1 to get my distorted sound. but when i turn up the volume and switch on the big muff and the overdrive i get way too much noise and i get feedback all the time. without the big muff, only the sd-1 switched on, i don´t have enough distortion from the amp.
is there anybody who can help me find out how to build a master volume mod into my amp that creates as much distortion as possible?

here is a picture of it, not mine, but it´s the same model(with the exception, that this amp has a foot swith input mod on the left).

over at the curt mitchell forum they told me about some Splawn mod or something.

That amp looks real similar to a 1987 50watt NMV Marshall. Couldnt you do something similar to the one wire mod as suggested in this thread? http://www.metroamp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3208

the Mig 50 looks like the same front end except that you have two inputs instead of 4 but the way the circuit is set up is real close. Look at the schematics over at schematicheaven.com Under the post 70's amps and then the Marshall section. Probably Dan or someone can give you a better idea on what you can try then I can.

You could always pick up an attenuator too. People seem to like the webber mass (www.webervst.com) and the thd ones the best.
