Best Boost/Overdrive Pedal?

Post by Tone Slinger » Sun Nov 12, 2006 9:38 pm

Hi everybody! I would like some opinions on what to use to boost the front end of an amp ? Over the years I have Only been able to find 3 pedals that I like, but have never been 100% happy. Old 1977 MXR dist. +(Wrong Frequencies) Several Ibanez Tube Screamer's(Roll's off too much bottom) DOD 250's(I can only use them with single coils, smooths out humbuckers too much) There is alot that I havent tried. Let me know what's good.

I rarely use anything right now between my guitar and my amp, but when I do want a boost I still reach for my TC Jauernig Luxury Drive. One switch, one knob....great sound.
And I'll never part with my original series Marshall Bluesbreaker pedal.

When I'm feeling experimental I use my Intersound IVP. Cream of the crop of distortion devices. But it is a rack mount.

Hi Tone Slinger,

maybe it works now there are two sound samples. On his english Dual-Drive description the samples are obviously not available.

I really like the xotic RC booster, though right now I'm using a PHI Electronics 1.618 boost. Fairly obscure pedal by Scott Appleton (Neal Schon's tech). It's pretty much on all the time when I play and really doesn't muddle the tone at all. Not cheap, however, for something as simple as a clean boost, but worth it to me:

This is an interesting pedal...Plain & Simple, Tru bypass one knobber, doesn't rob tone. nice.

Good for leads?

Yeah, I'd say it's great for leads, even without a super distorted overall tone...it adds "weight" to the note (without really coloring the tone), if that makes sense, which is very conducive to single note stuff.
