Just to clarify, I don't know what Hendrix used for that particular recording, but the Sunn Amps he used when he used Sunn were the Coliseums.

Just downloaded the track and it sounds like a Fuzz Face. It's the BBC Sessions, so the amp probably wasn't cranked to high hell. A Fuzz Face will sound a bit buzzier through a cleaner amp.

Yeah, I liked Hendrix's tone alot in the '68 tour. Lower wattage speaker's ( probably 25's or 30's) lower headroom, browner sound. Those el-34's were takin' a beaten. What fuzz unit was hendrix using on the long version of "Voodoo Chile" and I think possibly "House burning down"? I have heard that it was a real early Big Muff. Seem's no one,s for sure.

On my JTM45 I cannot get that buzzy sound with a Analog Man NKT sunface. It sounds a aweful lot like a fuzzrite to me.

I dunno if I take my fuzz and run it low and the amp low I get a good buzzy. With it wide open its not buzzy anymore.

I've got an Analogman modded Arbiter FF that has the standard NOS GEs, as opposed to the NKTs, and a 100K volume pot. Much fuzzier and raspier than my old NKT Sunface and London Fuzz. Plus, build tolerances were different back then. I've heard original NKT FFs that were raspy, spitty and gainy as hell and that didn't sound nearly as smooth as the Analogman. Other things to take into account are the temperature and bias of the trannies. They can affect the tone of the fuzz. Of course, it could have very well been a Fuzzrite. Who knows, Jimi had a shitload of gear.

BBC version of Hoochie Coochie Man sounds like his germanium arbiter FF with the tone knob rolled off. Alexis Korner is playing clean slide on that track also.
