Which pedal to get?

Hi. I'm looking for a pedal that will get me the best 70s/80s tone possible. I'd like to get my sound somewhat close to bands like the black crowes, or close to that. I have a marshall jcm 2000 dsl and am thinking about getting either the mxr distortion+ or an ibanez ts9 tube screamer. If you don't mind, post what you would think is best and feel free to put up any other pedal suggestions.

Thanks!
-Jared

Does the DSL not provide the right gain you're looking for?

I mean it's all right. But I saw Paul Gilbert use the nxt distortion in a video and it sounded fantastic.

There are so many overdrives on the market, that it is hard to point to one. Fulltone Fulldrive, Tube Screamers and all the various variants will go a long way to get you that vibe. I think an MXR Dist+ will get you more 80's - maybe something like Randy Rhodes. So many choices. I would start with an overdrive and a distortion. I am not very familiar with the DSL line, but aren't those 2 and 3 channel amps? Would think you can get away with using the amp distortion for harder tones and use an overdrive to start - Boss DS-1 or Tube Screamer TS-808. I happen to like the Maxon OD808.

I say get the MXR Distortion +

The new ones seem pretty good, though I have a couple of old ones that are really great through the right amp/tone.

Set your DSL on the rhythm channel, with just a touch of distortion, like a barely clipping type tone (Say AC/DC 'TNT'). Then boost it from there with the Distortion +.

... or the Coron Distortion 10, or the "tan" Ross Distortion.

The black Ross distortion and the Coron Distortion 15 use silicium clippers: more volume, and more bite.

If you want to nail '70/'80 distorsion stuff ala Black Crows maybe give a try to a Diamond Cornerstone. Since your amp is a DSL - lot of gain here -, I would go for an overdrive first.

Have you tried a boost pedal.. like a MXR Micro Amp. This way you the amp's natural tube gain...but driven harder by a clean boost.
