I would set the amp up just beyond breakup and get cleaner sounds with my volume knob If I need more gain I can kick on the fuzz face.

I would hope to be getting tones similar to Joe Bonamassa, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimi Hendrix, David Gilmour (I know this setup isn't ideal for this by any stretch), Jimmy Page, Warren Haynes, etc.

Is this a realistic expectation?

I built a Dickenson Spec JTM 45/100 and put a boost cap over v2.... A 32 or 33uf if I remember right. I gave it a little more balls, retained the character of the amp, and remained pedal friendly. It was great for Zeppelin, Allman, Rush, Al Di Meola Tour de Force, and SRV.. It's really easy to try. You can clip on the cap with 2 alligator clips to see if you like it.
