stef, I was considering getting that kit if I couldn't get the Whirlwind where I wanted it. time is $ and I'd say that for a few bucks more you can grab a Script reissue or Whirlwind, add this pot, and be done.

You can buy a vintage MXR Phase 90 for around $200 on eBay right now.

Seriously. If your on a budget, grab one of these. I bought one of the compressors and it has the same IC chip as the old vintage MXR's had. Could be micro comps in it but if it sounds good who cares.

Garbeaj, $200 is too much for something that old... lots of things could go wrong real soon with old pedals (foot switch, op amps, jacks, electrolytic caps)
Don't know why, but I feel like building one (script 90 spec) from the kit for 60 bucks. I miss the smell of solder fume and something to screw up I guess

I can only say my vintage Phase 90 worked perfectly since 1987 when I bought it and I only had it serviced last year. These old pedals are much more reliable than anyone would have you believe.

I mentioned that I saw a vintage one for $200 and some of the guys here are talking about spending more than that for boutique replicas and mods. I'm just saying there's nothing like an original one and they are well worth the money.

nah, my suggestion would to buy a reissue that has true bypass and is new parts, and replace the flyer with a pot. $100 and 30 minutes of time.
I'm certainly not knocking your vintage box. they are definitely bad A. Just throwing out a solution for those who either cant spend that dough or want newer features.

I gotcha...it just seems insane that people are doing these mods and buying various reissues and never truly capturing the sound of the vintage ones. I just think the vintage ones are still plentiful...it was the most common pedal in the 70s by a long shot and as vintage pedals go, they are relatively cheap and reliable, at least in my experience:)

Maxon made a Phase Tone pedal. The first of the line of phaser's was the PT-900 and is sold under Greco, Maxon, Footworks, Ibanez and one other. (can't remember the name) I just bought an Ibanez from early 70's in not working condition and got it going. Phaser search is OVER. Exactly Eddie's early phase. 8)

I just got a '77 or '78 Block logo/Script back Phase 90 and to my ears it NAILS the early VH phase sound. I got it for less than the 1974 Handwired RI would've cost new. Granted, it's lacking the AC adaptability, LED, true bypass, etc...but it's built like a tank and sounds incredible. The subtlety is there, the note definition remains intact...I have NO complaints at all.

From what I understand, this is the exact same circuit as the original script logo. I think there was a feedback resistor or something added to the original stock circuit around this time, which usually results in a bit of a mid hump, but mine doesn't have it.

Point being that even the later block logo/script back version sounds FAR better than the EVH version I was using and can be found for nearly the same money. Don't overlook one if you run across it!
