Monel steel strings (mona-steel): 60s tone

Post by Roe » Mon Oct 27, 2014 4:13 pm

Pyramid has started making monel strings that resemble the old mona steel strings that gibson made until 1973. Soundwise, the monel strings are punchier and less compressed sounding than pure nickel strings and a lslightly warmer souding than modern nickel-plated steel. In fact, they sound like the missing link between pure nickel and nickel-plated steel, and offer a genuine vintage tone that is absolutely great for The Who (pete townsend) and Ac/dc (malcolm young). Personally, I think the monel strings are much more versatile and powerful than pure nickel strings, and that they tend to work better with humbuckers.

so far 10-46, 10-48 and 11-48 are available, but 9-42 and 10-52 should be available in November.

thanks to don "tone-man" butler and pyramid for making these great strings available. Highly recommended

I will be trying these for sure! IIRC I read about Townshend using Gibson strings, so your comment is interesting. Would love to try a 11-48 set on my SG Special with the Townshend setup (CP103 and the 17k gauss Fane speakers).

I'm waiting for 9s myself. Plan to use the monel classics on one of my les pauls, a 335 and a 175 and a gretsch. ok. the 175 needs thicker strings.

Pyramid went with a round core by the way and the strings are slightly stiff. a 46 feels like a 48 or 50

I bought a duzin of monel 9-42. These work great on LPs and 335s. the wound strings sound exactly like Kossoff, Townsend, and Mal Young (who all used gibson strings)
