Fulltone Tube Tape Echo

Post by NY Chief » Mon Feb 13, 2006 5:24 pm

Anybody have any hands on? I'm thinking about scoring one. Always wanted an Echoplex but couldn't afford one back then. The Fulltone is pretty heavy $$$ as well but it is getting rave reviews and it's supposedbly built to last.

FWIW, I tried the fulltone unit briefly at a store and it was very cool; felt like a bulletproof echoplex. It has the stereo outs and other features that an echoplex does not have. it is also a little smaller, like the tube 'plexes, and would be great for gigging out with. had a great tone, too. the advantage here would be reliability and product service.

However, I just picked up another '73 EP-3 (the solid state model preferred by many) for $200. It was a little rough cosmetically, but sounds fabulous. I now have three of them and still spent a couple of hundred less than a new fulltone. currently the market is a little flat on the originals, too, so prices can be reasonable. Plus, if you don't like the echoplex, you can always sell it.

sorry for the novel, but I love these things!

I don't think i would ever blast away $1000 on an effect? Is it really all that better than all the competitors?

I bit the bullet and got one. A little noisy but damn is it it rich, full and open. Great slap back and the long repeats are a blast, too. Strange, I just got a hankerin to listen to some early Zep... :D

jmp2204, What is the best sounding echoplex in your opinion?

Fulltone tube tape echo

I had the Battle tubeplex, and the Fulltone TTE. The Fulltone has all the bells and whistles : Stereo mode, high/low speed, record level, echo tone, effect bypass. The Battle was always on, coloring the sound, but some prefer this. I didn't like the coloration myself. The echo effect on both were very warm. I kept the TTE, it just seemed alittle more flexible and tweakable to my tastes.

Redstone, do you have any noise issues with the TTE?? Mine is intermittment. Some days it' quite as a mouse, other's it's hellacious. Haven't changed tapes or tubes since I got it. Another project...

Musta missed this original post...

Had the EP ... got rid of it... Dry rotted rubber, shakey moving parts, hissy tape, and that was a good one.
Still have Rolands 201 Space echo alot less of the above and will keep it in the arsenal for what it does.
Used the Fulltone for a few weeks at da practice joint and thought it delivered well. It is what it is...
Fulltones without a doubt is the way to go if you want & desire a Tape Echo. (T-Rex Replica or the Maxon 999 would be my choice in pedal form.)
No, I wouldn't take it out for gigging for two reasons. bulkiness & fragility. It belongs in the studio/practice/ home NOT giging.
If servicing is ever needed  it would be very likely fixed due to the abundance of parts.
Money wise I would save up to get a Fulltone Tape Echo before I would spend 1/2 of that money for the "good ole stuff".

Hope you guys like it as much as I do. 8)

I love my memory man, but the problem with it is the bypassing. It really does kinda muck up the sound. I would recommend getting one but if you order one from Analogman, he true bypasses them to fix that problem.
But you are so right, they are definantly my favorite pedal to mess with and sound fantastic.

Just thinking about taking the TTE out for shows and if anyone in the audience really can hear the diff between a MM and a TTE.....

..like the outdoor show we're doing a Capistrano Harley this weekend. Bikers....

Fulltone tube tape echo

Post by Redstone III » Wed Sep 06, 2006 2:25 pm

The EH MM is supposedly much quieter. I had the original, it was noisy to the point of being a drag.I read somewhere that the op amp chips are socketed, tinker fun time. Lots of the nuances of the tape is lost in a big room, I feel, unless your PA and sound man are meticulious. What is your comfort zone.
