strat shielding and tone loss

had my strat shielded and used for the first time yesterday. man, what a disappointment. sounds like a different sets of pickups. they are the custom 54s and have real old fashioned low output twang. with shielding its just smooth mush. lost the character of the different positions to one generic sound.
even the drummer asked 'are you using some kind of chorus?' nuff said.
anyone else experienced this? my shielding will be coming out very soon.

Hi Clarky:
Read this
http://www.guitarnuts.com/wiring/shielding/shield3.php
I´ve not tried to do this way, but it makes sense.
In my experience you will lose some highs when you shield a Strat, but not as much as you describe. Are you sure you don´t have something touching the shield in the cavity ?

yeah i found that page last week and that what made me try it. i had a reputable tech do it for me so its not a botch job. i spent a while searching other forums like TGP for info and it seems some people do find a difference, maybe not as drastic as my findings.
it may be more telltale with the low output stuff as they are usually clear as a bell. ive got the xtra sustain that page mentions, but its similar to a tubescreamer compressed sustain, clarity for me has gone worse. i recorded my rehearsal and its clearly there listening back contrasting with the unshielded. and when even your'e drummer mentions it...!
just my experience

I rewired a Squier strat like that and it didn't change a thing tonewise. Except now I can stand next to a neon light and not buzz. Well, the guitar doesn't buzz anyway.

Yes copper foil= less noise and pickup clarity. No foil is best. live with noise. I've found the best noise supressor is the volume pot.

I've found when you do all that shielding you have to shield all the signal wires or you will lose alot of high frequencies.
