Trimpots in Rangemasters

Post by Herec » Thu Aug 17, 2006 9:24 am

Hey guys,

Will a rangemaster sound bad if I put in a trimpot instead of the regular ol' metal film resistor? I'd like to bias it correctly but not have to replace the trimpot, since I do not have a surplus of parts/good supplier of metal film resistors (the blue ones).

Yes use the trim pot. there is a guy on this site who has built a lot of them and that is what he recommends to get it right Two trim pots actually. there are two different spots where you can dial in the exact flavor you like then finalize it with a resistor.

Over on GEO Fex there's an indepth PDF file on the Dallas rangemaster and the use of trimmers to bias it up properly. Now.. he say's once you get it right them you remove the pots and measure there resistance and replace them with fixed values.

But would the trimpots not sound as good as fixed resistors?

I have no idea BUT..there is a DIY project called the Thunderchief..
http://runoffgroove.com/thunderchief.html where they have several trimmers in the circuit permanently. Personnally I'd say ..in a high gain circuit you'd want low noise resistors ie. metal film. But whay do Im know!!

trim pots in range masters

Trim pots cost alot more than resistors. And unless you have the multi turns can be a bitch to dial in. If you are using pad per hole perf, or have a board try using sockets.
