Good inexpensive WAH

Post by Necrovore » Tue Nov 23, 2004 9:57 pm

Whats a good wah for under $150? Yeah Im a cheapass. I want something that has a decent sweep, good tone, and true bypass. Im also open to modding one as well once I pick it up.

Try and find a used Teese wah. They are the best bar none.

You can get a Vox wah for $99.99 from Musician's Friend. THOSE are THE wah to have IMHO.

Just got a Vox V847. If you find people complaining about it being to nasal, it's as simple as backing off the pot on the pedal.

Trust me on this one...

In the beginning, God created the heavens, the earth and the Vox V847. And God saw that all these things were good, but then he realized that he needed the PERFECT guitar and amp to go with this.

So he said unto thee, "Let there be Marshalls and Gibson Les Pauls!" And God saw that these were great!

Then, when he wrote the 10 Commandments, he added an 11th. "Thou shalt not use Mesa Boogies!"

(In the voice of God)

GET A VOX V847!!!

Did the 847 finally get a true bypass added? Haven't looked in a while, I got to where I couldn't stand what Vox and Crybaby wahs did to my high end when they weren't on.
So I picked up a used Snarling Dogs Super Bawl Whine-O Wah, with the nice big chrome footprint for a pedal, this thing is so white trash I woulda bought it just to have it sitting there. It sounds pretty damn good, with three different sweep settings, and Estrogen/Testosterone switch (OK I don't remember what that does) and a switch next to the top of the pedal that kicks in a second inductor. The only thing that sucks is the physical build quality -- the damn pedal cradle won't hold the pedal stable in a mid position for that killer Michael Schenker solo. But a cool pedal nonetheless.

I repaired a Vox for a friend and converted it to True Bypass. It was OK but was no where near the wah that my Teese RMC3 is. Plus Geoffrey Teese has awesome customer service and stands behind his wahs 150%.

The Teese runs a little more but you should be able to find one used in your price range. If you contact Teese and describe the sound you are looking for he can tell which wah would work best for you.

Teese only a little more???  dude they are like $275 new. Yeah you said used. Wouldnt mind checking one out BUT Im long past the stage where Im gonna buy to try. I stopped that 5-6 years ago. If I cant pick something up at the store that has said item on the floor or installed(pickups) I dont even bother. Spending upwards of $45,000 in gear in 20 years only to end up with a $4500 est setup was a lesson well learned.

The Vox's don't have true bypass, but they're not that hard to convert. You just have to change the footswitch in it, that's all. They come stock with a SPDT(single pole double throw), and you have to change it to a DPDT(double pole double throw) switch. BUT, instead of doing the standard true bypass that just disconnects both the input and output jacks from the circuit and shorts them together, I have a much better true bypass that not only does that, but it also grounds the input to the effect circuit, which eliminates a floating input, which will increase battery life.

Musician's Friend has it for $99.99, but they also have that 30 or 45 day money back guarantee so that if you try it and don't like it, you can always send it back. But I GUARANTEE you'll love it!

Necrovore, listen to Hendrix. This is the sound of the mighty Vox. I've been using them for years and I DEFINITELY won't go back or try anything else. The Vox has THE tone.

Yes they are expensive new but The Flagship RMC3 sells for around $200 used with others down below $150. The Wizard wah is supposed to be very good with Distorted guitars. There is one on Ebay for $140 and one that sold for $139. I would stay away from the RMC1 if you are using Humbuckers it is voiced more for single coils and cleaner sounds. Anyway I was just trying to give you a few different options. There are lots of choices out there so you should be able to find something that fits you fairly easy.

I have heard many players that have liked the Dunlop 535Q as well. Let us know what you end up with.

What about the newer Vox Clyde McCoy?

Post by McGoogle McDougal » Wed Nov 24, 2004 1:11 pm

 Vox actually added a second model to their lineup in the last year or so - the V848 Clyde McCoy wah pedal. I think Musicians Friend sells 'em for $149. These have an inductor that's suppsedly a clone of the original fasel inductor and also have an improved pot with better taper to it. The footswitch is true bypass from the get go. I demoed mine next to a Fulltone Clyde and both the standard Vox model and the standard Crybaby. The Vox V848 Clyde McCoy held it's own with the more expensive Fulltone, although the Fulltone offers more sweep to it's pedal (which some might like or dislike). This model is so much more vocal than the standard Vox and especially the Crybaby - definitely cops more of the Hendrix/Cream wah sound. The best way I can describe it is that the Vox V848 (and pedals like the Fulltone, RMC, etc) make a "WOW" sound while the cheaper ones go "WAH". Anyway, my point is you can get this model brand new within your price range and it meets all your criteria.

Oh I was asked to plug this shop http://www.thetone-shop.com
This is my cousin Bill's vintage store. He deals with high end vintage stuff if anyone is interested.

Ok Thanks guys. Now Ill have to wait to see if Santa brings himself a Vox wah for Christmas. God you guys have no idea.... A wife and three kids all having birthdays going from last week in October on through a week before Christmas, pretty much spaced evenly, then of course the holidays, and two autos having registration and inspections all within the same period of time... God I love the new year once we get to October...

If anyone would like to convert to true bypass, as Jon said you need a DPDT switch, and the great assistance of Mike Fuller's schematics at www.fulltone.com . Go under his tech page, then under wah-wah talk. I've ordered my DPDT and am ready to convert!

I also replaced the inductor and pot in my V847 with some of Mike Fuller's Clyde style parts. This mod however was barely noticeable and the only thing apparent to me is an extended range of sweep. The pot is a lot more durable than the other crappo one Vox put in there too. This proves that V847's are great go-getters right out of the box! If you are going to do any mod to your wah, get it done with true bypass.
