What's up with 12BZ7?

Post by dynaman » Mon Mar 28, 2005 8:57 am

I've read on a few sites that this is supposed to be some super sub for the 12AX7. A buddy lent me one to try out. I put it in position V1 and it sounded terrible. Lots of hum. I was too skeered to dime the amp. The tube tested great on my tester. Anybody else try one of these before?

According to the data for the 12bz it is not intended for use as an audio amplifier but can be if needed. Sounds like the hum may be coming from the heaters. Maybe the audiophools are running DC heaters to get around this? I'll have to dig out some 12bz's and try for myself.

I think I read of someone using this tube in a Bassman. This person claimed that 12BZ7 has same amount of gain as 12AX7 with a lower plate impedence. I haven't checked the tubes' specs nor would I understand them. Soooo.....wanna buy some 12BZ7's?
