NOS 6ca7 w/ McMurdo Socket
Has anyone had trouble inserting a NOS 6ca7 into a vintage McMurdo 8 pin socket?

Tesla EL34's in particular have oversized pins (and often a very rough finish) and have to be given somewhat harsher treatment. Only 6CA7's I have is a pair of triple getter Sylvania's that I haven't even tried yet. Been saving them for a rainy day.
I do recall having to push my GE 6550's in a lot harder than I would do normally as well. Again, sat in a drawer, being hoarded...

Hopefully they just need to be mounted to the chassis to fit properly. I have heard mixed reviews of their quality over modern sockets. Not sure if I should include them in my build? Would you recommend them?

If it's a build, I really wouldn't bother. And if they are the black phenolic type, I probably wouldn't fit them at all. The black non-phenolic ones are okay though.

Do you mean the brown type are ok or the black. My gut is telling the black preamp McMurdos are little questionable...

Your gut may well be right. Only if the phenolic type though. Brown are usually fine.Velva wrote:Do you mean the brown type are ok or the black. My gut is telling the black preamp McMurdos are little questionable...
