Nice Little eBay Score

Post by Bainzy » Sat Feb 11, 2006 11:14 am

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 5862295406

picked this up yesterday, it arrived today - only 99p! It says "foreign made" on the label, and I'm pretty certain it's an RFT ECC83. I looked at it next to the RFT's I got the other week and it's exactly the same, and sounds exactly the same.

You know you got a great deal when the shipping is more than the item! :D

Better value than any of that new GT crap for sure, any factory code on it?

I can't be bothered pulling it out of the amp again, but I *think* the base had a 'U', then a backwards 20 underneath that. That's what one of the tubes I was looking at today had, could've been one of my valvos actually. Aside from that, no other factory codes. I'm 99% sure it's an RFT, as it looks and sounds exactly the same as my other 2 RFT's.

Sounds top notch in the extra gain stage socket - with the mids on 4 I can get some killer Megadeth tones. I'm liking it a bit more than the JJ/Tesla ECC83S that was in there now, but with more gain stages the difference between NOS and new production becomes less noticeable.

I got a tungsram ecc83 for £3 'buy it now', I'm quite curious as to see/hear what that's like - it could be a relabelled tube (maybe even a Mullard?).

I don't think it's RFT but who cares? Good score 8)

Here's a thread over at PP:

http://www.vintageamps.com/plexiboard/v ... +rft+ecc83

3rd post:
Other Mazda-branded ECC83 would probably have been made by Brimar or Ediswan factories in the UK... the blue print makes me think of the later Thorn era, the boxes were light blue then. If the plates are really short with only one flange and look kind of like a 12AT7, they may be East German RFT - but then they should say "Foreign" somewhere.
That's exactly what this Mazda is - it says "foreign", has short plates. It's exactly the same as the RFT's I've got, so it must be definately RFT. Which is pretty cool, as I'm starting to pick up this stuff myself - I'm always in awe when people Larry can just look at a blurry/dark picture of a tube and go "thats a xxxx tube made in xxxx" 8)

I'm not particuarly fussed what this tube is, as long as it's working. Heck, even a new production tube would've been great for 99p!

I've never seen a "Mazda" labelled RFT and the photo from eBay is really bad, but I'm 95% shure, that's a RFT 8)

If so, then it's very low microphonic, not a very bright sounding tube ideally for overly bright amps as V1 - and with huge gain and punch.

Larry
The fault almost always is sitting in front of the amp

Brainzy,

Tungsram is a hungarian made tube!
Are you tried these tungsram tubes?
What your opinion?
