i just got a reply from gt and they said these tubes will be available
around november

they also said they a/b ed the prototypes with an early 70's mullard
and absolutly could not tell the differance

if this is true our search for el34's will be over

As if theyd ever say anything but. Id like to hear that. 'We A/B's them against real mullards and found that ours are very close but arent as even EQ-wise and have a more present, glassy treble.'

Chances are they will be very good sounding for new production, expecially the initial runs. The GT12ax7Ms are a really nice sounding tube until you put them against NOS. The real deal is a lot smoother. I'm sure the power tubes will sound great, but not compare to the real deal.

Having both real Mullards and the GT Mullards, I'd have to say that the real deal is more complex and richer.

BTW I got 4 gt12ax7m and one went bad already can you beleive this crap (it became microphonic real bad, I thought it was someting else before I found it was that tube)....

I once changed ALL my filter caps (one at a time) to eliminate a loud hum in my Marshall. Turns out it was a bad Groove Tube 12AX7 pre-amp tube that was only months old. Should've seen how hard I slam dunked it into the trash can (was I pissed)!!! The tubes were overlooked because they were new and SHOULDN'T have faulted out. This is when LCRs were still available at $25/each. The worst part was that I prematurely tossed the old ones which were probably still ok (were the original caps from this '79 model).

Look, any tube can go bad. One of my recently purchased Mullard ECC83s went microphonic and dark so it can hapen with anything. And has for years.
