Sylvania JAN 12AX7WA

Picked up a NOS trio of these cheap. Heard some talk that EVH used these? Can anyone give me the rundown on these tubes?

Warm, rich sounding and very good gain with low noise. I heard that about EVH as well. Either way, they are nice sounding tubes for any application.

I'm not giving mine up but I know saw some maybe at TubeDepot or The Tubestore....chekc them out or do a google search for them. I have had mine for 7 years now so I forgot where I purchased them. I even have some Sylvania 7025's....very cool sounding tubes.

I've picked up two of them on ebay last week, top notch tubes - my current favourite for V1 and V2. You guys in America have it so good over there for these tubes, everytime I look on ebay.com there's tons of them going dirt cheap.

I bought a used Marshall 50 watt head last year and it came with Sylvania preamp tubes labeled 7025 but also stamped with ECC83. I bought some new JJ's ECC83's as well to try out along with the JJ ECC803 for V1. The JJ's sounded harsher and gainier with more presence but not nearly as musical as the Sylvanias. I am quite happy with the way the Sylvanias sound. Open and airy and very musical with lots of harmonics. Not quite as "in your face" as the JJ's but way better. IMO.

The Sylvania 12AX7A/7025 is a great tube, not as bright as the GE 12AX7A's - but still better from the US made preamp tubes for British Style amps in my ears is the RCA.

Hey Larry,
so yer saying the RCA 12ax7 or RCA 12ax7wa?
and what do you think of Amperex( i think thats how its spelled) tubes?

The Amperex also is a great sounding tube, but that's not a US made tube.
These tubes were made in the Philips plants in Heerlen/Netherlands and on demand of the US distributor labelled as "Amperex". It's the same tube as the Philips "Made in Holland", Valvo "Made in Holland" and the Philips "Miniwatt".

The newer JJs seem to be voiced for Messy Burgler Nu-Metal amps, with more of a high end emphasis. The older ones and Teslas were a nicer all around tube.
The Sylvanias are nice tubes. It all depends on the tone you're after. I really like Mullards and Brimars in Marshall more, but tone is in the ear of the beholder.

Have a Mullard in V1 and a Sylvania in the PI slot on my Hughes & Kettner.
I lost same versatility changing over to this (had a telefunken copy in V1 before), but once I started listening very closely to the detail that's in the mids now, I couldn't make myself change it......
It's a reaal nice sound....
