First Experience with NOS Tubes

Post by Bad Kitty » Fri Mar 03, 2006 7:53 pm

Just got two JAN 5751's from Tejas Tubes. I couldn't wait to get home and plug em in.

Can't say I'm impressed. The first thing that hit me was the noise. Really bad. My GT's had less buzz.

It could be that my amp is noisey and I just couldn't tell with my old tubes but I can't use it like this. It almost drowns out my playing. I can't tell about the tone because the noise just gets louder.

I'll try switching some around some more.
Never settle for an amp thats smaller then you are.

The 5751's should be really nice tubes. I never heard of tejas tubes. Maybe the tubes weren't NOS?

You never know what you'll get with vintage tubes. Sometimes you hit, sometimes you miss. I find some amps prefer some tubes to others.

What amp are you putting them in and what sounds are you going for? Have you played around with many tubes in this amp?

I think your just not lucky BK!!!Terry Kilgore suggested to me not to go with those JAN's they are know to be problematic sometimes (reliability...), I know you will say why is that, ain't NOS suppose to last for ever and be reliable?.........Yes they are, keep digging!!!

Definitely a bad first experience. It's not the norm. If anything, I find some bad microphonic NOS tubes here and there, but on the whole NOS last way longer.

That's werid, the 5751 is a great tube to use if you want less noise in an amp. I have two GE 5751's (white printing, not JAN) and they are awesome. I wonder if the JAN's are different?

Sorry for the late reply, just got back home from a gig.

I'm going to call tejastubes Monday and see if he can I can exchange them. I tried switching them around too but each one was still noisy.

I've got three more coming too but at least I got them cheap. The low noise is one of the things that attracted me to them.

Maybe it is my amp and the GT's were weak.

We'll see I guess.

Oops, I guess the ones coming are 12ax7's. Pretty sad when you don't even remember what you bought .

These ones have a halo getter and the ones coming have a d getter.

The 5751's with the green printing sometimes are really terrible humming and can only be used with DC heater.

Larry
The fault almost always is sitting in front of the amp

Supposedly the GE Five Star 5751's are the dreme de la creme when it comes to 5751's.

A little update:

I was kinda bummed about these tubes and didn't know what to do with them then I remembered I have two 12AX7's in my Digitech 2101. Not having anything to lose I plugged em in and they sound awesome.
No hum, no noise, no problems.

When I turn up the gain a little on the "clean tube" setting, wich only uses the first tube, it sounds like I have a compressor turned on. Very cool.

BTW, anybody ever hear of Penta tubes? That's what was in there before.

Good to hear that you were able to make a positive use out of the tubes. I believe that Pena is/was a rebrander of tubes. I think it's Penta Labs.
