My Take on the RFT ECC83

Post by killertone » Sat Mar 04, 2006 1:13 am

Well I got them tonight and I was totally stoked to check them out in my '77 JMP Master Volume. They sound pretty good but not as good as the NOS JAN Phillps 12AX7WA's that I already had in the amp. The RFT's had more gain but the bass was not as controlled. The OD was a little grainy with the RFT's and the Phillips sounded smooth.

I have a shitload of 12AX7s glass coming (Mullards, Amperex, Tung Sol, Sylvania, GE, Raytheon, RCA, Matsushita) and look forward to checking all of those out. I got great deals on everything that I bought so even if I hate everything, which I seriously doubt, it will have been worth it to find out what I really like.

Maybe my ears are just used to the Phillips and I need to give the RFTs some more time. I defintely will...

RFT and Tungsram are very desirable tubes for Guitar amps. RFT tubes can be of various construction types from a number of plants in former GDR (E. Germany) like Funkwerk, Neuhaus and Muehlhausen etc . You can read more about the RFT tubes at the following link:

I have a pair exactly like the ones on your site and then I have 2 pair that are rebranded Amperex with the orange globe logo. Any idea when these were made? The construction looks identical as far as I can tell. Thanks for your help! You have a great site.

Mostly 70s-80s production. You are welcome.

BTW, Original Tungsram Hungarian tubes always have a numbered metal chad attached either to the getter post (70s-80s production) or to the plates (50s-60s production). Here are a couple of pics:

Tubemonger, welcome to the forum. Any suggestions on NOS 12ax7 tubes for the 12xxx series of 100 watt amps? Looking for a smooth distortion type sound. Currently using Sylvania's.

Thanks,

Allen

Apologies. No one in our group plays Guitar and will be unable to give you specific "tone" related advice. However, we do have a lot of Guitar or Pro customers and it seems people like following tubes (in no particular order):

Mullards ECC83 - 1960s or 50s
RCA Long Black Plate 12AX7
Tungsram ECC83 - 1960s-70s
RFT (various styles) ECC83 GDR

For Clean Sound
- NOS Tesla E83CC
- Brimar CV4004 Box Plates

Yeh - it's search engine optimisation and don't bother doing it. Text with the same colour as the background can get you kicked off google's search results, which is a million times worse than having a few less search results because of not having those words there. Put them in your keywords tag in the top of your html source code.
