Need held identifying age of 1960b cab
Gents,
Just scored this cab in Iceland, according to this http://forum.metroamp.com/viewtopic.php ... 2&start=15 the cab is '67-'68 but the date codes on the speakers say it's '73. I would be pleased if any of you knowledgeable people could have a look and comment.

Looks to "possibly" be a late 60's cab since it has metal handles and metal caster cups, but if you can send me better/larger pics (no bigger than 800x600 pixels and under 500k) I can give you a more definitive answer.
Fair enough?

Re: Need held identifying age of 1960b cab
Your cab was made sometime in 1968, probably early spring based on the construction. Your speakers are from 1973 (AF date code is January 1973) and they’re G12H30 75 hz 1777 cones (reconed, not original Pulsonic) T1217 30w 16 ohm.
Your cloth has been spray painted black, and you should have a 6” gold Marshall logo, not the 11” white logo from 74- present.
Hope that helps!

Re: Need held identifying age of 1960b cab
Its a mid-late 68 cab in my opinion. recones are a possibility, but I have seen plenty of 1777 cones in early 73 and furthermore they have been original pulsonics in my opinion too, not recones. they look and sound exactly the same as the '3' stamped cones.
also that little crack around the edge of the cone (on the pic of the 1777 stamp), is usually a sign of a well used speaker. the cone is probably going to be very free & loose when you move it with your hands, not stiff like a new speaker.

BG, you know I've never seen any original 1777 cones in anything before 75. I've got some 102-3 and 014 cones into 1974 if they were 8 ohm models, too.

Re: Need held identifying age of 1960b cab
you're clearly not buying the same speakers i am then. admittedly i have kind of been seeking these out though. they are often sold as recones or muellers so can be found cheaply Ive seen them from Feb 73 to mid 75 on G12S, G12M and G12H. Same as '3' cones or I will eat my hat.
also look for '0444' stamped on the 55Hz cones.
heres a pic i took of a 73 marshall 2x12 PA cab I sold a couple of years back. the best example i can give as photographic evidence (really you need to hear them to be convinced) because the wiring and solder joints were completely original. Both speakers sounded exactly the same when A/B tested. One has a '3' cone and one has a '1777':
I have read that the 1777 is celestions part number and the 3, 102 3 etc is pulsonics part number. makes sense to me. Ive also got earlier speakers from 65 & 66 with H1777 stamps and they look & sound the same as similar period 102/003 stamps too. some are date matching pairs so its a fair A/B test. clearly the same cones (pulsonics) just with different stamps on them.

I have 1777 and '3' speakers from the same cab BF 3 stamped T1221s (same labels, 16ohms, hammer painted frames, grey tabs etc so nothing fancy). Not recones, look identical sound identical (I can post pics too if sceptical as they sound good and I have kept them!)

Well, damnit I feel cheated. After buying over 400 pre rolas and 100 plus rola Celestions, I think I should have seen some 1777 cones from 73. You guys have got one up on me this time.
(I'm going to go cry in a corner now....)

I know the Baron has vast experience of these things (my own experience of these is about half of yours Jim and I have only taken apart broken ones!)

one on ebay recently, the date stamp is BF12V. he sold the matching speaker in a separate auction and you can see the date stamp clearer on the other one:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Set-of-Two-Vi ... 7675.l2557" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
they are out there.
Ive got more examples, but the pics are buried on two different computers, finding them is a job and a half, im not very organised.

Gents, no worries. I'm sure I haven't seen every variation of a Celestion date code/cone #/stamp, etc. I doubt anyone has, but you two have seen something I never did before. That's why I always tell people not to hand me that "expert" title or anything like it. I just like to say I have some experience. And as much of that as I may have, I learned something new from you two today.
