100w slp with 2x12 Vintage 30
Hi guys. I have a super lead thats not built yet and I was looking at some cabinets to use with it. Is it safe to use the slp with 2x12 120watt rms V30 cabinet? Im asking because as I already know super lead has 150 watts or more peak levels it should be the same for the speakers. I dont want to use a master volume and I dont want to dime the amp either. But it would be fine to know if I dont blow the speakers at 6-7 on the volume knob. It would be cool to install lar/mar but Im undecided a bit.
I dont have 4x12 option right now so which route would you take?
Regards,

The cab won't last if you don't attenuate or install a master volume. You could also pull tubes to reduce your heads wattage.

Pretty much, what julkke said.
Few options:
Do a PPIMV or MV (ppimv for me)
Score another 2x12 120-130w cab (watch your impedance matching)
Pull a couple tubes
Variac (not sure if this will do it?)
Attenuate
if none of the above, then plan on definitely recording with that setup, 'cause those speakers are gonna sound AWESOME - while they're on their way to dyin' a beautiful death!

Yep those are your options. Variac will do it too, going to 90 volts will reduce your amps output to about 50w.

Attenuator. Keep your amp stock.

Thank you very much folks. Attenuator sounds cool but a bit out of my range right now. Lar/mar looks like the way to go. I also thought of 100w scumbacks but I will do that after I complete the rig.
Thanks again,
Thanks again,

V30s are 70w rated (probably conservative too).
If you are really heavy on the bass and play thrash (unlikely) then you might cook the speakers, but I doubt it. They are only V30s so cheap to replace if you do cook them.
A PPIMV installed on 8 or 9 out of 10 would do very little to impair your tone and would bring the amp down to safe levels for sure.
Genuine vintage green backs I would not risk as a quad but a pair of V30s can take it - I am pretty sure.

Celestion's site says V30s are 60w.

Yes they are 60 watts and I wouldn't go that route for a 1959/2203 PPIMV.julkke wrote:Celestion's site says V30s are 60w.
I am not a fan of those speakers for this application. To me these speakers a best suited for newer tones used with newer Marshall/Boogie style amps.
I was at my wit's end with this and had even made a special custom ¼ cab which was a 2x12 slant bottom or A cab. In other words, the top angled half of an A-cab. I was going for aesthetics as well.
Let's say I tried V-30's, G12-65's & Gold's and none of them delivered the classic tones that were being evoked through my 4x12 BB loaded B-bottoms which my sound was built upon.
Well, I mysteriously blew up one of my BB loaded cabs, sent the speakers off to Jim to be re-coned. After talking to Jim for options he recommended I try re-coning them with the 65wat VC. I thought I had nothing to loose so I took that recommendation. Reluctant at first, but since I went that far, why not. I didn't need the other two, so I just had them re coned (and FBI'd) to put for sale which I will be doing this week in our classifieds here on Metro.
Well, I couldn't be happier with this outcome in that I still keep close to my original tones with a 4x12 ! I'm stoked !
I still get to keep my cab ! Yay ! Especially since it was covered with Marshall's dark green levant.
So now there are new Celestion Creambacks that are 65 watts ? I haven't tried them yet, but will eventually. Sounds like they could handle a 2x12 setup nicely. The old Cream's are great match-ups for JTM's. Slightly warmer than the GB's. A Bluesman's Special.
Your best bet for this with optimal results in THE Tone would be either to try out these new Creamie's, Jim's Scummie's or do what I did and re-cone & FBI blown out BlackBacks re-coned by Jim.

I play with an avatar with two v30s and use an attenuators and hot plate with no issues. Been doing it for over a year. This is my practice set up when I don't want to lug the 4x12. You should be fine.

They do sound good... I just think there are now better options available for this application to achieve
a more classic sound (of course if that's what your going for) and not be forced to compromise 100% of one's tone
that has taken so long to achieve, that's all...
