1971 G12H30 T1217 Speaker

Post by Icarus » Mon Nov 01, 2021 7:19 am

Hi Guys
I have a friend interstate that one of his neighbours is selling an old no name speaker cab {In good condition}
with pulsonic g12h30's 75hz T1217 1971 judging by the pics I have seen

Trying to research on these speakers , I see Marshall never used the T1217 speakers . Why would that be ?

I have a few g12m25 from the early 70s but never played G12h30's other than the Kurt Muller Black backs

Does anyone have any experience with these speakers and what to expect ?
I will more than likely buy the cab but you know how it is , Im trying to find out that I can while I wait

Thanks

The T1217 is a 16 ohm G12H30 75 hz 30w 50 oz heavy magnet speaker. Marshall used them, and they're listed in the "History Of Marshall" book as well.

If it's a real 1971, it should have a Pulsonic 102 003 or 102 / 3 cone stamp on the back of the speaker cone. If not, it will have something else, 1777 (Kurt Mueller), WF1009 (Waldom), etc.

They're a big sounding speaker, with strong/tight low end, flatter midrange, and more upper mids/treble than a G12M.

Thanks for the info
yeah its got me wondering
As all the info Im finding is Marshall didnt use the T1217 from the 70's onward

Im going of the Marshall Forum and the following from "Bygonetones.com " ......

" T1217 is easily the most common G12H Celestion greenback model from the 70’s. It was the stock speaker with many UK brands in the 1970’s, such as Orange and Carlsbro, with Marshall being the notable exception.

Note – if you do find a set of T1217 in an old Marshall cab, there is a good chance they are non original, or worse – fakes,

Im not sure if there a UK based site , and Marshall cabs outside of the UK had a different selection of Celestions ?

There were quite a few Creamback (73-75) era T1217, T1281, T1221 and T1220 speakers in cabs I owned. There were even more BlackBack era (75-80) models. I only really looked for T1281 55hz G12H30's and T1221 75hz G12M's for my 60's cabs. I'm sure there had to be some from all versions. I had several different labels on mine, Rola, pre rola, Marshall labeled, no labels-just greenback covers, they varied. Usually the plain greenback covers were the ones in 4x12 cabs. Marshall labeled ones generally were found in combos, maybe the label was a form of advertising the brand.

I know that Orange, and other amp brands used them as well...or they got shipped to the US, and we're that popular in the EU (who knows?).

Many times I'm sure speakers were swapped from other cabs / cab makers, and they were still Celestions. The only way to know if a speaker set was original to cab, in all honesty, is to have bought the cab yourself and then you'd know if they were ever swapped...or faked.

Yeah sure I understand people are always swapping speakers

I was just wondering why Marshall didnt use this particular speaker

I will buy the cab I mentioned regardless , Its not a Marshall cab .But its not the cab Im interested in

I have had a few Marshall 1970's Cabs with Black Back G12H30's
One with 75HZ then another with 55HZ speakers

If I remember right I actually found the 55HZ ones brighter.

Anyway , if they sound as good or better I'll be happy .

I've put a quad of Pulsonics T1217s in my 1968 B cab and it is my go to cab for my Marshalls I wanted T1281s but could not find good ones for a sensible price (I have an original 72 Orange cab with the same). My other 4x12 cabs have Pulsonic 55Hz Ms and Pulsonic 75Hz Ms which have their own flavours but the T1217s help a JTM45 sparkle!

Marshall used Celestion models T1281, T1511, and T1221 mainly. If you find T1217s inside a Marshall they are most likely replacements taken from another brand of cab like Carlsbro or Orange. Music Ground would also put fake T1217's inside their fake cabs with a fake white Marshall label on the back, watch out for those.

However, I did once own a 1973 lead and bass 1x12 cab with a greyback T1217 inside. It looked convincingly original and was 'period correct' for the cab. That is the only time I have seen a T1217 inside a Marshall and thought it could be original.

They are good speakers, just always make sure to check the condition of them. Always check for coil rub and check the glue holding the spider support.

Hi
I got the cab , there speakers look in good condition , I had to get one speaker repaired as the spider came loose and the dust cap was coming off on one spot.

Interesting thing is there darker/earmer sounding than my pulsonic g12m25s

I can tell you that the T1217's are very rare speakers with pre-rola labels, especially
when matched. Marshall were mainly using T1281, T1221 and T1511 in their cabinets until around 1972.
I have a 412 with matched T1217 21DD & 22DD date codes (21st and 22nd April 71), original 003 pulsonic cones.
Just killer tone !
