According to old Marshall catalogs reprinted in the HOM book, the Goodman speakers were used in some early Marshall cabs before they switched to Celestion. That's as much as I know about them.

Goodmans? Allan Holdsworth mentioned that he loved these years ago. Are they some form of Celestion?

goodmans are their own brand they did a lot of alnico stuff for vox and some early marshall cabs. Goodmans imo are as good as if not better than celestion well i think i like goodmans better and they are a heavier speaker. Celestion and goodmans were the original expensive speakers of the day for guitar cabs and fanes were cheaper. infact goodmans were more expensive than celestion but they were mainly used in laney, and wem and other branded cabs of the day.

goodmans are a rarer speaker than celestion and they have a higher power rating well the audioms have they were rated approx 50 watts each but goodmans also did some nice 15 and 18" speakers that were used in all the dub and bass rigs of the day

Thanks for the info!

So if goodmans speakers can handle more power than pre rola GB's I quess I can dime my Plexi SB without the use of an attenuator? The amp outs out 120 watts max...so ;)

i think the goodmans in that cab maybe rated 30 watts i am not too sure bout the various goodmans styles.

lets clear up 1 thing a 100 watt marshall puts out approx 140 watts at clean that is approx anything between vol 1 and vol 4 as you crank it you get about 180-220 watts so do the maths you can't crank it through a 120 watt cab

:D

My tech measured my Plexi and it puts out 120 watts MAX!

really cause if you do the root2 x power that will give you 140 watts clean. 120 watts seems waaaay off cause if you use a single 120 watt cab you will soon fry it there was a reason why the original stacks came with 2 cabs the G12H cabs both were 120 each and that handled the brunt.

me and jim had a discussion about this in the marshall section read marshall power using rms formulae

for a 100 watt plexi putting out 120 watts seems way too low

thats an early Goodmans speaker in the link, at least the same era as the Celestions in the picture, probably even a few years earlier.

I've had quite a lot of their Power Range speakers (think I might even have two in the cupboard doing nothing). They're darker than most comparable Celestions, but the 50w power handling is handy to say the least (200w 4x12).

I've got a pair of old Goodmans alnico 12" speakers sitting here waiting for reconing - the quality is excellent, rock solid frames and a massive alnico magnet.

Not to spam here or anything, but they're all sitting here doing nothing if anyone is of a mind to make an offer - I'm moving house and it's less things to carry to the new place I suppose.

if they are the audioms i may be interested but i have a lot of stuff going on at the mo but keep me in mind, yeah the goodmans are a more solid speaker and i think i prefer them to celestions cause i have more goodmans than celestions haha

They are darker than celestion's. I use one along with a Celestion g12S In the clip below (I put it up as I didnt see much sound samples of the audiom)I disconnected the celestion so you can hear the Audiom on its own. This is the Audiom 12P-D version and rated 50watts at 8 ohm.

on the talk of goodmans i put 4 of mine in my marshall 4x12 and i love them to bits they are the 15 ohm 50 watt version, they don't move as much as celestions but they have a magic of their own. At this moment in time they are my favourite speaker compared to the celestion G15m but by hell they don't half make a 4x12 heavier!

I'm using a 50w Goodmans speaker in my 1x12 'plexi' combo at the minute - great speaker.

that's the ones i use HTH I love them! I blew one sadly and i'm trying to find another replacement i use a 2x12 loaded with them for my sound city pa 50 head. I have the original spec sheets for those up in scotland as i got a NOS pair about four years ago they are more trebly than celestions tbh as they have an 84 hz. I think once i get my G12M blackbacks reconed to 55Hz i will have 2 goodmans and 2 celestions in an X pattern
