Celestion Blackback cone code?

Post by cryptozoo » Thu Jan 29, 2009 9:37 am

Anyone out there know what variations of cone codes can be found on 1970s 25-watt blackbacks? I found a set and am trying to determine if the cones are original...

They should be 1777 cones, only for T1221 75 hz models, unless they're 444 55hz cones for the T1511. In a rare short period they MIGHT be RICxxx or 98700 cones, but only in mid 1974.

The 25 watt blackbacks with the 444 cones are a pretty cool speaker, I've got a hiwatt cab I loaded with them. Phil

yeah some mid 70's cone have no stamp. not sure if they are early kurt muellers or another manufacturer entirely? usually quite pale/grey looking cones the ones with no stamps. find them late 73 - 75 usually.

Usually there's a code # on the cone if it's a Kurt-Mueller cone. You should have a 1777 cone on that model in white ink, but I have seen black ink, making them very hard to see. Look high up underneath the frame by the neck/smallest part of the cone, or behind a frame spoke.

I've seen them as a light grey, white and black color for the ink. Good luck!

The cone in that speaker looks to be original with the correct doping around the edge and the dust cap.

There have always been partial stamps and missing numbers in the cone stamps from day one. I have my cones made by Kurt-Mueller and they're customized with a cone # in white on them now for the latest models. Sometimes they don't get a complete stamp on them, or it's overstamped so that a 3 looks like an 8.

That's why knowing the cone contruction, rib type, # of ribs, etc is important to know (for me at least!).

There was a period from late 73 thru mid 74 where the cone # stamps were missing almost entirely for 8-10 months, then they showed back up. Go figure. One too many pints of beer at the pub during lunch maybe, who knows! LOL
